| Joseph Sylvester Hodges, November 9, 1859 in Sumner County, Tennessee-May
20, 1935 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, married Martha Eudora “Dora” Sammons,
January 31, 1874 in Warm Springs, Arkansas-February 14, 1950, both buried
in Rockwood, on January 2, 1894 in Hempstead, Texas. Joseph Sylvester
was the son of Miles Hodges (1830, died during the Civil War of dysentery)
and Lucinda Jane King (died in 1886, buried in Rice, Texas). She
brought her children, Meredith (1857), Samuel (1858), Joseph, and Mattie
(1860) to Navarro County in the early 1880’s. Martha Eudora was the
daughter of Benjamin Sammons (1831-September 3, 1905) and Sarah Barrett
(1831-August 5, 1911). Joseph Sylvester and Martha “Dora’s” children
were: Edgar Joseph, February 14, 1896 in Hempstead-July 26, 1971, buried
in Coleman; Martha Jane “Mattie,” January 2, 1898 at Hearne; Ralph Monroe,
January 25, 1901 in Calvert-April, 1983, buried in Waco; James Thomas (Tom),
March 2, 1904 in Calvert; Mary Ruth, January 15, 1907 at Crews, Runnels
County-1907, buried at Crews; Unnamed boy, born and died 1909, buried at
Crews; and Hazel Lee, February 23, 1911 in Vandervoort, Arkansas.
The family moved to Concho Peak, between Shields and Rockwood, in August
1915. Prior to 1915, Joe S. worked for railroad companies; Dora was
an excellent seamstress and was hired by individuals to do such work.
Joe farmed after he came to the Concho Peak community.
In 1934, Joe moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, with his daughter, Hazel
and her husband, Raymond Inman, due to ill health. He died at his
daughter’s home. Dora stayed in Coleman County. She operated
a boarding house in Coleman during the depression from 1930-1935.
Due to an inability of her tenants to pay rent, she closed the boarding
house. In 1944, she opened and operated a boarding house for several
aged women in Coleman until her death.
Edgar Joseph is the only child of the Joseph S. Hodges who remained
in Coleman County. He married Josephine (Josie) Ellen Estes, December
7, 1900 in Rockwood-April 4, 1968 in Coleman, buried in Coleman, on January
13, 1920 in Santa Anna, the daughter of Jacob Andrew and Lena Frances “Fanny”
(Dunaway) Estes of Rockwood. After their marriage, they moved on
a farm west of Rockwood. In 1922, they moved to another farm 3 miles
northwest of Rockwood, known as the “old Gardner place.” Two children
were born, Joe Andy, May 19, 1923 and Jerlene, July 14, 1925, both in Rockwood.
They moved to West 10th Street in Coleman on November 14, 1940. Edgar
went into partnership of a John Deere dealership. From 1941-42, the
family moved to Lampasas for Edgar to start a new job as a salesman for
a John Deere dealership. They moved back to Coleman in late 1942
and resided at 103 Hollywood Drive for the remainder of their lives.
In 1942, Edgar bought the local agency of the Continental Oil Company and
owned the agency until his retirement in 1968. He and Josie were
members of the Rockwood Methodist Church and later the First Methodist
Church in Coleman. Edgar was a fifty year member of the Masons.
He served in the Army during WWI and was stationed and fought in France.
Josie was active in the Rockwood Methodist church functions.
Joe Andy married Treassie Edrene Crutcher, August 31, 1948. Two
children: Eddie Joe, March 6, 1952 and Ellen Gayle, August 9, 1955, both
born in Coleman. This family moved to Fort Worth in the early 1960’s.
Jerlene attended Concho Peak Elementary, Shields Junior High and Santa
Anna 9th grade and graduated from Coleman High School in 1942. She
attended John Tarleton College for one year, then accepted a job at Randolph
Air Force Base in San Antonio during WWII from 1943-45. Jerlene married
Wayne Galen Haynes on February 14, 1947 at Coleman (see John Hardin Haynes).
Their first child, Ronnie Wayne, was born July 12, 1948 in the Coleman
hospital. On May 1, 1949, they moved to Fort Worth where Wayne had
accepted employment with General Dynamics, 1iving in the River Oaks section
of Fort Worth until June 1961, when they moved to a farm four miles north
of Roanoke in Denton County where they presently reside. Jerry Charles
was born April 3, 1956 and Barry Lee, January 8, 1966, both in Fort Worth.
Ronnie Wayne married Dixie Dianne Fanning, October 1, 1971 in Denton, the
daughter of Charles and Julia Geneva (Foster) Fanning. They have
three children: Brian Christopher, April 19, 1975; Ken Dianne, June 17,
1978; and Amy Kathryn, March 30, 1982, all born in Fort Worth. Ronnie
attended UT Arlington and North Texas State University, receiving a BS
in Civil Engineering in December 1972 and a Masters in Public Administration
in May 1982. Ronnie presently works for Dallas Water Utilities, live
in North Richland Hills. Jerry Charles married Canda Kaylor in May
1980, one son, Steven, born in 1983. He graduated from Baylor University
in 1979 with an Accounting Degree. They presently reside in Hurst.
Barry Lee graduated from Northwest High School in May 1984 and will attend
NTSU.
