THE J. M. HINDS FAMILY

Joseph Monroe Hinds was born 5 miles southwest of Waldron, Scott County, Arkansas, November 26, 1868, son of William P., a farmer, and Nancy (Brooks) Hinds (see William Robert Hinds).  He came to Texas two years later, locating first in Bell County.  He worked for wages for several years.  In 1889, he made his first crop on shares, continued farming in Bell County, until 1899, when he came to Coleman County, settling at Santa Anna.

On November 27, 1890, he married Miss Ida Parker, daughter of L. R. and Matilda Jane Parker (see William Lafayette Parker).  Fifty years later, in 1940, he purchased the old Parker homestead and owned that in addition to a large interest in Coleman County.  They were the parents of eleven children:

(1) Jesse Monroe, born in Bell County, March 5, 1893-August 31, 1964, buried in Brown Ranch, married Jewel Barton, June 7, 1914.  They had no children.

(2) Ozella Pearl, February 25, 1895 in Milam County, married Robert W. Barton, August 23, 1914 in Coleman.  They moved to Lynn County in 1927.  They had four girls: (2a) Allie, August 1, 1915, married Frank Sargent, December 10, 1933.  They live in Brownfield, had three children; Glen, Jean and Jimmy.  (2b) Marie, July 23, 1917, married Nelson English, February 8, 1936, live in Corpus Christi.  Five children: Ronnie, Don, Dean, James and Marilynn.  (2c) Margaret, March 12, 1921, married Burnie Bingham, January 15, 1938, lives in Lubbock.  Three girls: Bobbie, Nancy, and Rhonda. (2d) Carolyn, March 3, 1930, married Grady Woodard, September 3,1947, lives in Odessa.  Two children: Grady Joe and Donna Lynn.

(3) Rosa Vernon, October 28, 1896 in Bell County, married Abner Calvin Sparks, November 8, 1914 in Coleman County (see Abner Calvin Sparks).

(4) Ola, November 19, 1898, in Bell County, married W. D. Terry in 1916 (see Terry-Cissell).

(5) William, born in Coleman County in 1900, married Sadie Shumate in 1925.  They have no children.

(6) Auraba, born in 1903 in Coleman County, died in 1930, married W. J. Davis in Navarro County. Three children: Doris, William Joe and James.

(7) Ira, born in Coleman County in 1906, married Eva Jones in 1941 (see George Anderson Jones).

(8) Floyd, 1907-1912, buried in Brown Ranch.

(9) Daisy, born in 1911, married Ralph Duncan in 1925.  They have one son, Donald.

(10) Sharlott, born in 1915, died July, 1948, buried Coleman, married R. B. Saunders in 1933 (see Robert Baird Saunders).

(11) Lonnie Woodrow, born in 1917, married Bobbie Pearce in 1938.  Four children: Nancy, Billie, Jess Bailey, and Lonnie Joe.

Mr. Hinds was affectionately known by hundreds of friends as “Uncle Joe,” was active in community affairs and was a member of the Church of Christ.  His hobby was a collection of guns, walking sticks and fiddles.  He was a lover of fine hunting dogs.  Mr. and Mrs. Hinds are buried in Brown Ranch, he died August 4, 1943 and she passed away in 1948.
