The Andy C. Herring family was established when he married Emma Lindemann, December 17, 1890, in Bell County.  They moved immediately to their ranch home 5 miles north of Talpa about 1.5 miles inside Coleman County from the Runnels County line.  This was on land that he purchased from his father for $2.50 per acre.  He had lived about 5 miles northwest with his parents, sisters, and brothers the previous 3 years in Runnels County (see W. T. Knox and Jas. M. Brown).  Andy’s father, A. Herring, had purchased about 14,000 acres of land in 1886 being partly in Coleman and partly in Runnels County.  He moved his family from the Brenham area the following year of 1887 to the ranch about 7 miles northwest of Talpa on the Runnels County portion.  A. Herring (originally spelled Hering) was born in Oberkauffaugen in the state of Hessen in Germany and immigrated with his parents Heinrich and Maria (Schroeder) Hering to Texas in 1846.  A. Herring was married to Sophia Kettler, December 20, 1865, also a native of Germany.

Andy C. was born January 15, 1870, and his wife Emma, was born September 17, 1871, at Industry, Austin County, both members of the Lutheran Church.  To this couple 4 children were born: 2 daughters and 2 sons.  The daughters were older than the sons, both died in infancy.  One died of diphtheria and the other died of an infection in the face.  This was caused by a spark that flew out of the fireplace and hit her, as her mother was sitting and holding her in her lap, in front of the fireplace.  Their names were Olga and Hettie.  Edgar Otto was born February 4, 1895, and Alfred Herman, January 5, 1898.

Edgar married Cora Belle Dancer in a buggy in Talpa, May 7, 1916 (see Thomason-Hughes).  To this union was born one son, Edgar Dale, November 20, 1931.  E. Dale married Arletta Jane Sides in De Leon, June 13, 1964.  To this union were born Andy Dale, December 5, 1965, and Angelita DeAnn, May 18, 1969.  The Dale Herring family lives on part of this Herring Ranch at this time.  A part of the Rafter H Ranch operated and owned by the Dale Herring family has been in continuous operation by the Herring family since 1886 and down to the 5th generation.  Edgar and Cora were active members of the Talpa Methodist Church for about 35 years until they moved their membership to the First United Methodist Church in Ballinger in 1955.  Cora Belle died June 12, 1966, Edgar, December 27, 1980, both buried in Ballinger.  Dale, Arletta, Andy and Angelita are active members of the First United Methodist Church in Ballinger.

Alfred Herring married Mrs. Vera Tubbs in 1943.  No children were born to this union.  Alfred died March 2, 1968, Vera March 12, 1972, both buried in Ballinger.
