Wade Charles Hemphill, known as W. C. or Wade, settled in southeast Coleman County in 1891.  He was born January 29, 1849, in Clarke County, Mississippi, died December 31, 1897 at Santa Anna.  He was the youngest child of Samuel and Nancy (Granberry) Hemphill.  W. C. Hemphill was married first to Marian M. Cleveland and they had one child, a daughter, Zelma Irene, called “Birdie,” who married July 31, 1890 in Bastrop County, Texas, David C. Godby.  Marian M. (Cleveland) Hemphill died about 1879.  On May 5, 1880, in Bastrop County, W. C. Hemphill married Cuba Hemphill, his second cousin, who was born February 8, 1843, at Hemphill’s Prairie, died February 5,1943, at Abilene, both W. C. and Cuba are interred at Santa Anna.  Cuba was the daughter of Cornelius Murphy and Elizabeth (Snoddy) Hemphill.

Prior to settling in Coleman County, W. C. Hemphill was a Lieutenant in Company G of the Fourth Cavalry, U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Concho in what is now Tom Green County.  W. C. Hemphill was serving during 1871 when depredations by the Kickapoo Indians were particularly bad in the area that is now Coleman County.  Following his army service, W. C. settled in Elgin, where he was a school teacher and carpenter.  Elgin was only a few miles from the home of his oldest sister, Martha Elizabeth (Hemphill) Hemphill, who had married their first cousin once removed, Cornelius Ambrose Hemphill.  In Bastrop County two sons and three daughters were born to W. C. and Cuba.  The children were Charles Wade, Tonie, Lenna, Leonard Lee, and Ethal.  In 1891, W. C. Hemphill moved his family to southeast Coleman County at Trickham where he operated a grocery store and engaged in ranching.  Two sons and a daughter were born into the family in Coleman County.  They were Cornelius Gillespie, Jesse Lester, and Gladiaes.

Charles, known as C. W. or Charlie, was the first child of W. C. and Cuba (Hemphill) Hemphill (see C.W. Hemphill Family).

Tonie Hemphill was born October 4, 1883.  She married in 1908 at Santa Anna, George Washington (G. W.) McDonald, son of Richard McDonald and Martha (Fletcher) McDonald.  G. W. McDonald was born in 1875, at De Leon, died September 16, 1961, at Plainview.  G. W. and Tonie had two children, Donald Hemphill, M. D., and Malvern George now an attorney in Odessa, Texas.  G. W. graduated from Baylor University, in 1903, and became superintendent of county schools in Coleman County (see Coursey).  In 1918 he became a teacher at Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, later Dean, and in 1923 became President of Wayland, retired in 1946.  Before her marriage to G. W., Tonie was a school teacher.

Lenna Hemphill was born January 4, 1886, died August 21, 1886.

Leonard Lee Hemphill was born June 13, 1887, died September 17, 1959.  He married Alma Baker and they had a daughter, Burta Lee.

Ethal Hemphill was born November 16, 1889, died at Abilene.  She was educated at Santa Anna High School and Baylor University.  She taught school before her marriage on September 22, 1919, at Waco, to Clarence L. Prichard, M. D.  They had no children.

Cornelius Gillespie Hemphill was born March 5, 1892, died March 18, 1894.

Jesse Lester Hemphill was born December 17, 1894, married Runie Rasco.  They had two children, Jesse Lester, Jr., and William Thomas.  Jesse Lester was educated at Santa Anna High School.  He was in the automobile business in Port Arthur for many years.

Gladiaes Hemphill was born May 19, 1897, died October 20, 1978, in Abilene.  She married on September 4, 1919, in Waco, Donald Blakeney Weatherby.  Donald and Gladiaes had one child, Marjorie Marie, born in Corsicana.
