Joseph Patrick Hemphill, the only son of Zeno and Joe Morris Hemphill
was born December 18, 1947 (see Zeno
Hemphill). He grew up on his parents ranch in North Coleman County
and attended the Coleman Schools. He was an honor student throughout
his entire academic career. He played baseball and lettered four
years in football. Much of his time was occupied by 4-H projects
and he was the National winner in Boy’s Public Speaking; he also had a
successful career showing club calves. He attended the Methodist
Church and was very active as a boy in Coleman Rodeo Association activities.
Among his other interest were hunting and fishing.
Joe Pat attended Texas A&M University. His major was Veterinary
Medicine. He received a B.S. degree and then in 1970 a Doctor of
Veterinary Medicine, with highest honors. He opened a Veterinary
Clinic in Coleman and was very successful until a heart condition forced
the sale of his clinic and restriction of his practice.
While in Texas A&M Joe Pat met and married Alice Elizabeth Berry.
She was the daughter of Delle Northington Berry and James Berry.
Her grandparents were Rucker and Elizabeth Bailey Northington of Lampasas;
also Holly and Victoria Garner Berry of Lampasas. Joe Pat and Alice
have two sons Heath Alan, born September 11, 1973 and Brent Lee, born January
27, 1976. They are active members of the First Christian Church in
Coleman. Joe Pat is past President of the Coleman Rodeo Association
and is presently Chairman of the Board of the Overall-Morris Memorial Hospital.
Their children are engaged in baseball and 4-H work. The family takes
an active part in the operation of JZ Ranch with Joe and Zeno Hemphill.
