Charles Haygood Grounds was born in Lovejoy, Collin County, February
26, 1883 (see D.W. Grounds). He went to school in various places
and to college at North Texas in Denton. He taught school in the
north Texas area. He was teaching at Dorchester, Grayson County,
where he met Alberta Elizabeth Blackburn, the daughter of Albert Blackburn
and Elizabeth Marsh, originally from Tennessee. They were married
March 27, 1910, in Dorchester, at the Blackburn home. They had four
children when they moved to Coleman County. Haygood taught school
at Glen Cove, Crews, Kerby, Herring and Pleasant Valley. They moved
to Talpa in September 1920, and their youngest child was born there.
Mrs. Grounds taught school at Herring, Crews and Talpa. Haygood was
a mail carrier and later postmaster at Talpa until his death August 9,
1945, buried at Talpa. Mrs. Grounds was acting postmaster until October
5, 1947. She later married W. H. Pape of Crews. She died September
7, 1958, buried at Talpa. The children of C.H. and Alberta are:
(1) Hazel Mae, married Owen Bragg, July 8, 1928 at Crews (see Bragg
Family). They built a house on some land they bought on the Coleman
County line. They had five children: Harold; Russell; Glenn; Cheryl;
and Larry. They all went to Talpa-Centennial school. Harold,
Glenn and Larry graduated from Texas A & M University. Cheryl
went to Tarleton and Midland College. Owen was a stock farmer and
in the oil business. We all went to the Methodist Church at Crews.
Harold married Helen Caruthers, daughter of Truman and Dora Caruthers of
Coleman (see Caruthers-Tolar). They have two children, Michael and
Joy. He is a stock farmer and has a home one and one half miles west
of Glen Cove. They attend the Church of Christ in Coleman; Russell
lives at home; Glenn married Jo Lynn McWilliams, daughter of Kenneth and
Ila Jo (Toombs) McWilliams of Talpa. They have a home in Hondo, pecan
orchards, do trickle irrigation and have a gift shop. They have two
children, David and Shelly; Cheryl married Tommy Moss of Uvalde.
He works for Highland Insurance. Cheryl is a buyer for a dress shop
in Midland. They have three children, Scarlett, Mindy and Chad.
They have a home there; Larry went to medical school in San Antonio after
graduating from A & M. He is now a Major in the United States
Army and head of Staff and Surgeon at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
He married Cynthia Sturmon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Sturman of El
Paso. She is a registered nurse. They have three daughters,
Amy, Kelly and Ashley. Owen died August 27, 1975, buried at Glen
Cove. Hazel Mae lives at home and sees to the business.
(2) Daniel Haygood (D. H.) went to school at Tarleton and Howard Payne,
married Lois Dietz, daughter of Lester and Lillie (James) Dietz of Crews.
D. H. taught school at Brown Ranch, Mozelle, Centennial, Talpa-Centennial
and San Angelo. He is now advisor of the Eleven County Special Education
Program. He has two children, Dan and Jean. Lois died in 1980,
buried at Talpa.
(3) Frank Albert married Annette Wagnor of San Angelo. He had
an office equipment store there. He was a Staff Sergeant in WW II.
They had two children, Frank, Jr. and Marion Elizabeth (Meg) Bird. Frank
died January 26, 1966, buried in Fairmount Cemetery in San Angelo.
(4) Anna Lee married James Emmett Branscum of Talpa. They live
in Dallas. They have a bicycle shop and home there. They have
two daughters, Janis and Jerry Lynn.
(5) Ira Eugene was a Major in the Air Corp in WW II. He was in
England and in the Normandy Invasion. He married Thelma Phariss of
San Angelo. He taught aviation at Sweetwater a short time.
They have three children, David, Dennis and Joy. Ira died October
11, 1957, buried in Fort Sam Houston Cemetery in San Antonio.
