John Foster Gordon was born
August 18, 1850 in Walhalla, South Carolina, and moved with his parents to
Georgia, when he was six years old. He joined the confederate army as a
teenager. After the war, he came with his parents to Upshur County, Texas. He
became a civil engineer, studying at a college in Daingerfield. He surveyed
land in West Texas, moved first to .Brown County, then to Gatesville. In
February, 1876, he moved to Camp Colorado. He helped survey and plot the City
of Coleman.
In 1878, he married Dora Alice
Mason, the daughter of William Mason, where the Coleman depot now stands. She
was born November 28, 1861 in Parker County and came to Coleman County as a
child. Her grandparents came from North Carolina and her great grandmother, who
was an Adams, came to Virginia from England in 1700. Dora died January 16,
1921, buried at Coleman.
J. F. Gordon served as County
Surveyor, elected in 1878. He served 2 or 3 terms as district clerk and was
postmaster for the City of Coleman. He started the first permanent drug store
in Coleman in 1878. Later, he took L. E. Collins as his partner. Collins had
come from Upshur County also, and had come to Coleman with Gordon. He also
operated hardware stores as sole owner as well as in partnerships; Gordon and
Roscoe and Gordon and Pittman. He also sold furniture and farm equipment. He
had extensive farming and ranching interests in Coleman County and New Mexico.
He retired to the old Kin Elkins place on the Jim Ned that he bought in 1931 or
1932. He died January 31, 1941, at the home of his son, Dr. Jack Gordon in
Coleman. He had one sister in Coleman County, Josie Hambright, mother of Obie,
John and Bill (see John W. Hambright).
Children of J. F. and Dora
(Mason) Gordon:
(1) Ethelyn, October 28, 1879-May 23, 1964, married William
Clarence Holcombe, October 8, 1871-August 24, 1959, both buried at Coleman.
They farmed in the Silver Valley community and had two boys, Chetwyn Briggs
(Chet) who married Lula Jo Harvey of Santa Anna, and William Gordon who married Ila Buck of Silver Valley (see E. J. Buck);
(2) Edna, married Jim Bardwell of
near Post;
(3) William F. (Will), January 19, 1882-October 3, 1917 from the
flu, married Flo Snodgrass from Coleman. Both are buried at Coleman (see Robert
L. Snodgrass);
(4) Oldem Robnette (Bud), June 1, 1887-December 23, 1965,
married Leona Pearl Wade, (April 25, 1886 in Lamar County-November 27, 1972,
both buried at Coleman,) on December 28, 1906, in a buggy east of Coleman by
Preacher Strickland . She came to Coleman County as a child from Lamar County
with her parents, John Alexander and Mattie L. (Casey) Wade, who were
originally from Virginia. Their children:
(4a) Ralph Marshall, 1909-1974,
married Jean Yates of San Angelo in 1943.
(4b) Mildred Alice, 1915-1946, buried
in Coleman, married Hollis Youngblood of Georgia.
(4c) Foster Alexander and his
wife, Martha, live in San Antonio. F. A. was in the Cavalry stationed at Fort
Clark, Texas, in World War II. This was the last cavalry in the U.S. Army and was
disbanded during the war.
(4d) Robnette L. (Bob), January 6, 1920, married Louise
Bomar, May 2, 1942 (see Bomar Family). He attended schools in Valera, Union
Hill and Coleman. They have one son, Roxy Lee, born March 7, 1945, married Judy
Nell Hoffman of Talpa route, August 22, 1964. Roxy and Judy attended the
University of Texas and are graphic artists in Dallas. They have two sons, John
Calvin and Quanah Parker. Louise, Roxy and J. C. all attended Talpa schools. R. L.
(Bob) was in the 90th Div. Headquarters Company, 357 Inf. in World War II.
(4e) Mattie
Pearl, married Charles Futrell of the New Central community. They moved to
California at the time of their marriage soon after World War II. Charles was a member
of Company B., 142 Inf., 36 Division.
(4f) Wade and Marie live in Dallas. He
attended school in Novice and was in the Army of Occupation in Europe after
World War II;
(5) Annie, married Burch Patton from the south part of Coleman County.
They moved to New Mexico, where they raised their family;
(6) Walter S., May 2,
1891-November 8, 1982, married Mary E. Wilson, January 21, 1893-October
27, 1964, both buried at Coleman. They had two girls and
one boy. (1) Gwendolyn married Edward Scott. (2) Winifred
married Jess Rhoden. (3) Wayland married Mary Markland of Santa Anna. They have
two children, Gwendah Kah and Mark Gordon and five grandchildren;
(7) Jack
Marshall, married Winnie Gray (see J. H. Nance). Jack was a dentist in Coleman
until moving to Fort Worth where he practiced and taught in T.C.U. He has since
retired in Coleman. They had one son and one daughter. Jack Gray (deceased)
married Elizabeth Chance of Arlington, Virginia. He was a graduate of Annapolis
Naval Academy. Louise married Dr. Richard (Dick) Bradley of St. Louis,
Missouri;
(8) Evelyn, married Howard Welch (deceased) of Santa Anna and moved
to Fort Worth soon after marriage where she still resides. They have one son,
Charles Gordon;
(9) John Bennett, May 29, 1885-November 5, 1886, buried in
Coleman.
