Harry "Deacon" Gordon was born
March 26, 1874 in Bastrop County. He married there in 1895 to Cealia Clark,
daughter of Frank and Adeline Clark. She was born December 25, 1881, and died
August 28, 1968. Harry was the son of Harry Gordon, Sr. and Iola Gentry Gordon.
Harry came to Coleman in 1924,
and took a job picking cotton for Roland F. Kemp, who lived five miles south of
Coleman on the Shield highway. He then sent for his family, who were living in
Temple at the time. They lived in a tent on the Kemp farm until a house could
be built. After a few years, they moved to Coleman, and bought a house on East
Pecan Street, across the railroad tracks. In the July flood of 1932, they lost
everything they owned. After borrowing $300 from Henry Beau, Harry built a
house on East 1st Street, where he lived until his death.
Harry’s wife, Cealia, worked
for many years in the home of Sam Cobb. Harry was a deacon in the True Vine
Baptist Church. Harry died January 24, 1980 at the age of
105. Some of Harry’s descendants that have lived in
Coleman in recent years are, David Jackson (grandson), Ernest Jackson
(great-grandson), Frederick and Ernest Jackson, Jr. (great-great-grandsons),
and Trena Jackson (great-great-granddaughter). Harry and Cealia had seven sons
and five daughters born to them. Those living at Harry's death were: Viola
Warrick of Coleman; Bernice Payne of Tucson, Arizona; Evelyn Payne of
Sacramento, California; J. H. Gordon of Tucson; Odell Gordon of Palestine;
Leamon "Dash" Gordon of Dallas; Harry Gordon, Jr. of Los Angeles; and Ben
Gordon of Paso Robles, California. Harry had over 200 descendants at his death.
