The Gordon Mitchell Bennett Family

     Gordon was born February 27, 1907, in Ballinger, graduated from Talpa High School in 1925.  His parents were Virgil and Minnie Norris Bennett (see Solomon M. Bennett family).  He moved with his parents to Coleman in 1928.  He joined the Texas National Guard, Company B, 36 Division, in 1930, and remained in it until 1953.  In 1932, he married Lois Wilson from Novice.  Lois was born in Aubrey, (Denton County) in 1912. (See Jerry William Wilson).  She moved with her parents to Coleman County in 1914 in a covered wagon.  Lois graduated salutatorian from Novice High School in 1930, and attended Draughon Business College in Abilene.  In 1953, the family moved to Hurst, where Gordon worked for Bell Helicopter as a painter for 20 years, retiring in 1973.  Lois worked tor Leonard's Department Store as a Traffic Clerk, for 23 years, retiring in 1975.  They moved from Hurst in 1972 to Weatherford.  They had six children:

     (1) Geneva. born March 18, 1933, in Novice, graduated from Coleman High School in 1950, received a scholarship to Durham Business College in Fort Worth, she married J. V. Curry of Bangs, February 10, 1951, in Coleman.  He works for General Dynamics and Geneva is in the real estate business in Fort Worth.  They have three sons: James Gordon and his wife. Sharon, have two daughters, Christi and Alicia, they live in Fort Worth; Gary William and wife reside in Fort Worth, have a son, Tim, and a daughter, Melissa; Don Glenn and wife live in Arlington.


     (2) Donald J., born February 14, 1935, in Coleman, attended Coleman schools and graduated in 1954 from Birdwell High in Hurst.  He joined the National Guard in Coleman, Co. B, 36 Division, then transferred to 49th Armored Division in Arlington.  In 1961 the 49th was mobilized, seeing duty in Vietnam and Korea, he retired in 1982.  He married Berta Dickey, August 10, 1956, had a son, Darrell.  They were divorced in 1963 and Darrell carries the name of Gilbert.  On April 10, 1965, he married Peggy Ashley Powers.  They have two children: Kim Ann and Tony, and live in Savannah, Georgia, where Donald is a flight controller in the army reserves.

     (3) Virgil Wayne, born October 11, 1936 in Novice, attended Coleman schools, and graduated from Birdwell High (now Haltom) in 1955 Cum Laude.  He joined the National Guard in Arlington, and served 10 years.  He married Nancy Peyton August 1, 1959, in Houston.  She graduated from NTSU in Denton, in music, and accepted a teaching position in Odessa, and Wayne attended Odessa Junior College, enrolled in Arlington State, graduating in 1964, majoring in engineering.  Nancy taught in the Hurst school system.  He went to work for Thos. S. Bvrnes, Fort Worth, where he is now Vice-President.  They have two daughters, Beverly and Elaine; and reside in Arlington.

     (4) Jerry William, born in Coleman, May 15, 1939, attended Coleman schools and graduated from L. D. Bell High School in 1957.  He joined the 49th Armored Division of the National Guard and entered the army in 1961 retiring in 1982.  He saw duty in Vietnam, Okinawa and Germany, plus stateside duty.  He married (1) Margie Smith Denton, July 2, 1959, and divorced in 1968, and married (2) Kathy Clark Thompson, March 6, 1970, they have one daughter. and live in Weathertord.  He is an ROTC Instructor in the Fort Worth school system.

     (5) Virginia Lee, born in Coleman, August 26, 1940, attended Coleman schools and graduated from L. D. Bell High School in 1958.  She married Don Preas from Silver Valley, October 26, 1964, and they have one son. Duane.  Virginia is employed with Chromalloy Precision Products.  They reside in Smithfield.

     (6) Allen Gordon, born June 23, 1943, in Coleman, attended Coleman schools, graduated from L. D. Bell High School in 1961.  Was chosen all-district in defense in football and received a scholarship to Tyler Junior College.  He graduated from NTSU in 1965 and married Linda Sue Middleton, August 15, 1964, in Hurst.  They have one son, Scott, and one daughter, Stephanie.  Allen served in the U.S. Marines and is employed by International Harvester Company in Dallas.  They reside in Keller.
