Calvin D. Baker was
born January 6, 1884, in Parker County, one
of five children of Mr. and Mrs. W. A.
Baker. He moved with his parents when
he was four years of age, and remained and
maintained a home on the same tract of land
for 85 years. January 9, 1904, Calvin
married the former Maude Lee George in
Brownwood, born October 29, 1888, in Hunt
County, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. P.
George, who had four other children.
They too, in their lifetime, spent some time
in Coleman County, as well as other members
of the W. D. Baker family.
It was said of Mr.
Baker that he remained tall, straight and
slim throughout his life, and of Mrs. Baker
that she possessed exceptional grace, charm
and beauty, uncommon for her years, and
commanded the love and respect of a devoted
husband and their five children: Earl Baker
of Plano (see Ridings Family), Bob Baker of
Ft. Worth, Mrs. Vera Nichols of
Stephenville, Mrs. Alma King of Houston, and
Mrs. Marie Andrews of Ft. Worth (all were
born in Coleman County). Mr. and Mrs.
Baker were active in the affairs of their
church; he was a steward and trustee of the
Burkett Methodist congregation and she was a
devoted worker and worshiper. Both
were members of the Eastern Star Lodge, and
he was a Mason.
They moved to
Ballinger in their later years. Mrs. Baker
died in 1970; and Mr. Baker, in 1972, both
are buried at Burkett.
