In 1911, W. T.
"Bud' Andis and his wife, Margaret May
Gentry "Maggie," moved to Coleman from
Nacogdoches County. Maggie was the
daughter of Tom and Nannie Curry (see Joel
Curry). At the time of their move,
there were four children: Parilee (born in
Waco in 1899), Nannie (born in Milam County
in 1903), Elizabeth (Nacogdoches County in
1905), and Cecil (Nacogdoches, 1908).
A fifth child, Thelbert, was born in the
early 1900's but died at the age of
four. The family settled in Coleman,
and Bud Ands began working as a night
watchman for the city. Later, he also
worked and operated several cafes in
Coleman. Two additional children were
born in Coleman, Curtis in 1914 and Modeane
in 1921. After Bud Andis died in 1950,
at the age of 75, Maggie Andis continued to
live in Coleman. In 1960. she moved to
Holiday Hill Rest Home until her death at
the age of 84 on February 26, 1965.
Parilee Andis
married Eddie Z. Orr of Coleman in the
Thompson home on Commercial Avenue in August
1916. They had three children: Mary
Alene, born March 3, 1918 in Coleman, Eddie
Z., born December 8, 1920 in Brownwood, and
David Lee, born January 2, 1930 in
Brownwood. Ed Orr ran a garage in
Coleman before moving his family to
Brownwood, later, California. They
eventually retired in Coleman. He died
February 13, 1970 at the age of 69.
Parilee moved to Waco near her son, Eddie,
in 1982. She died in February,
1983. The Orrs are buried in Coleman.
Nannie Andis
married Gene Spivey (see Spivey).
Elizabeth "Dedie"
Andis married Otus Sewell in Coleman in 1924
(see Jesse N. Sewell). The family
lived in Abilene and Waco where Otus was a
watchmaker and jeweler. They returned
to Coleman in 1962 where he worked at Earle
Smith Jewelers on Commercial Avenue.
Dedie resides in Coleman. Their
daughters reside in California and Jackson,
Mississippi.
Cecil "Soupy"
Andis, after attending Coleman schools,
began employment with A-1 Cleaners on
College Avenue owned by C. H. Shore.
Eventually, he bought out Shore, but later
sold out. Cecil married Susan Sophia
McDermett, daughter of Oscar and Ethel May
McDermett (see Oscar McDermett), November
30, 1935. They had two children,
Cecilia Annette, August 23, 1936, and Jerry
Charles, February 10, 1939.
In 1951, he bought
the Klean Klose Kleaners on Live Oak Street
near the Coleman High School. He
operated that business until he sold it to
Bahlman Cleaners of Winters in 1970.
After a brief bout with cancer, he died
September 5, 1981 in Coleman. He was
buried in Coleman. Susan Andis
graduated from Seal Hospital School of
Nursing in 1935. She was in private
duty nursing until her appointment as
Coleman Independent District School Nurse in
1949. She was instrumental in the
organization or the Candy Stripers at
Overall-Morris Memorial Hospital and the
Future Nurses. In 1972. she was
honored as Lady of the Year by the
International Office of Beta Sigma
Phi. She retired as school nurse in
1980. She is a member o the Ladies
Hospital Auxiliary, the Texas Graduate
Nurses Association and the American Nurses
Association.
Cecilia married
Steve Hoffpauir in 1956. They moved to
Houston and had four children: Susan
Leigh, April 23, 1957; Melissa Ann, August
25, 1959; Stephanie Adair, January 11, 1964;
and Jon Cecil, December 21, 1968. The
Hoffpauirs returned to Coleman in
1971. They were divorced in
1973. Cecilia and Robert Pawlik were
married on December 25, 1974. They now
live in San Diego, California, where Cecilia
is a travel agent and Bob is National Sales
Manager for Harcourt Brace Jovanovich
Publishing.
Jerry Charles Andis
graduated from Coleman High School in
1957. He was chapter president of the
F.F.A., awarded the Lone Star Farmer's
degree, and president of the Junior Rodeo
Association, which he helped organize.
He married Gale Rene (Prettyman) Alvarez,
July 25, 1964. A daughter, Dana Rene
was born March 18, 1965. David, Gale's
son, was adopted by Jerry in 1965.
Jerry and Gale were divorced in 1971, and
Jerry and the two children moved from
Houston to Nacogdoches in 1973. He
helped form Agri-Sales Associates where he
is a sales manager. He married Mary
Lynn (Isbell) Tucker on August 29, 1975.
Curtis Ands married
Ollie Mae Byers in 1937 in Coleman.
They had four daughters: Dee Ann, 1939;
Nannie Sue, 1940; Tonya Lynn, 1941; and
Sherry, 1949. The family moved from
Coleman to Bisbee, Arizona, in the late
1940's. He is retired and makes
jewelry as a hobby.
Modeane Andis
married Edgar Saverance from Coleman,
December 6, 1941. They had three
children: Rita Jeane, November 15, 1942;
Kay, December 28, 1943; and Clyde, May 25,
1951. They now live in San Antonio.
