M. C. M. Abernathy - Family Histories

     Masterson Coleman McCormack Abernathy, Ir., was born May 24, 1862, in Monticello. Drew Countv, Arkansas, to M. C. M. Abernathy (May 24. 1820-1879) and Mary Donaldson August 12, 1896-Novemher 23, 1902.) Nancy Winnifred Poole was born July 15, 1867 in Goshen near Troy, Alabama, to Joseph Henry Poole (September 6, 1845-March 8, 1883) and Nancy Baker Sikes (March 24, 1842-September 1, 1882). M. C. M. Jr. and "Winnie" were married April 8, 1883, at Springfield, near Mexia, in Limestone County, Texas. They came to Coleman County in 1908, settling in the Bowen community. In 1910, they moved to a farm just south of Fisk, then later bought a farm about 3 miles south of Brown Ranch, where they lived until he died April 17, 1941. Winnie then had a small house moved into Fisk, near her daughter, Gertrude Adian. Later, she sold this house and her sons. Marvin and Melvin, bought a house for her in Coleman, where she lived until after the second broken hip and other health problems caused her to move to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Marv McKee in Coleman. She lived here until she died November 29, 1960. Both are buried in Brown Ranch.

     All thirteen of their children were born in East Texas. They are:

       (1) Joe Coleman Abernathy July 13, 1886-January 1, 1960) died in Fresno, California, where he had moved to the home of his daughter after the death of his wife, Mary Ann Adian, in 1950, buried at Brown Ranch. They were married August 24, 1913. (see Etienne-Adian). Their daughter, Mary Winnifred, December 21, 1916, married (1) Wesley Bryant Coleman. He died January 6, 1959 in California. They had 2 sons; Eldon Abernathy, January 28, 1937, married Joy Stover, their children, Kimberly Ann. Russell and Jennifer Elaine; David Caudle, February 7, 1945, married Jo Kaker and have a daughter, Shannon Lee. Winnie married (2) Jack Brakeman, November 14, 1959.

     (2) Mary, November 28, 1887, married lames Walter McKee February 17, 1923. Their daughter Doris Jean, January 3, 1926, married Marcus Cheney. February 11, 1944 the son of Carl B. and Audrey (Livingston) Cheaney. (see L. J. Livingston). They have 2 children:

       (2a) Diana Jean, February 16, 1946, married Jim Wheeler, January 14, 1967, two children, Jeffrey Mark and Becky Lynn. Diana later married Gary Tankersley, one son, Weir Loil.

       (2b) Donald McKee "Don', December 7, 1948, married Susan Taylor, one son, Taylor Lynn.

     (3) Mattie Pearl (August 18, 1889-October 6, 1971) married Wallace Ewing Martin, October 22, 1911. (see James Crusenberry Martin).

     (4) Gertrude (January 26, 1891-February 10, 1958) married Frank A. Adian, December 25, 1912. (see Etienne-Adian).

     (5) Art Clinton (October 5, 1892-March 30, 1972) married (1) Gertrude Field, January 26, 1916-December 6, 1963 (see John W. Field0. Their children:

       (5a) Katie Lou, February 15, 1915, married Wesley Kile, January 2, 1937. (see John Morgan McQueen);

       (5b) A. C. Jr., November 16, 1922- June 26, 1970, married (1) Mozelle Money, March 25, 1940. (see Stacy-Monsey Harris), (2) Florence Thweatt, (see Walter Earl Thweatt), (3) Bruce ?, July 5, 1947, their daughters: Sandra Clair, October 21, 1948, Tami Jeanea, August 10, 1950 and Carolyn Jay, August 14, 1954. A. C. married (4) Beulah ?. Art, Sr. married (2) Tessie (Riley) Wiginton, May 21, 1965. (see John W. Field and D. L. Riley).

     (6) Fred Clayton, June 27, 1894-Novem-ber 6. 1904.

     (7) Lela Irene, April 14, 1896-February 8, 1977, married Jim Griffith, December 24, 1936. He died
October 20, 1958.

     (8) Charles Kaufman, June 23, 1898-October 5, 1898.

     (9) Zepha Claude, January 5, 1900-June 15, 1902.

     (10 and 11) Melvin Lee and Marvin Willie were born March 22, 1902. Melvin married Edna Sampson April 25, 1925 (see Francis Marion Sampson). Their daughter, Peggy Jean, January 30, 1931, at Slaton, married James Thomas (Cotton) Hubbard, May 19, 1951, at Brownwood. Two daughters, Jamie Lynn, December 18, 1951, married Lee Hershell Williams, May 26, 1973, (see Williams-Monsey) and Terri Lee, May 25, 1954, married Jackie Densman in the Presbyterian Church in Coleman. They live in Coleman.

     (12) Thomas Walton. February 20, 1905-January 17, 1915.

     (13) Girlie Lore, December 13, 1907, married P. H. Polk, December 13, 1931. (she was born on the 13th, married on the 13th and was the 13th child of the family.) Their two children:

       (13a) Sara Nan, May 16, 1940, married Garland Holloway, July 9, 1960, two children, Marshall Trea and Joanie.

       (13b) Randy Craig, December 12, 1951, married Suzanne Shields on March 6. 1976. (see Elgean Shield).
