Garland Abbey is
the son of Charles H. Abbey and Vernon May.
(See Clairborn B. May.) Charles H.
Abbey came to Coleman County in the fall of
1889 and moved to the Indian Creek community
in the fall of 1890. Charles H and
Vernon were married July 1, 1900.
Garland Ellis Abbey was born July 30, 1902,
at the Indian Creek Community. Ada was
born September 8, 1906. Garland and
Ada attended the Indian Creek School.
Garland went from Indian Creek to Coleman
High School and on to A&M where he
graduated in 1925.
On August 4, 1931,
he was married to Zula Landrum, daughter of
Tom and Mattie (Mitchell) Landrum Valera.
(see Landrum-Mitchell). Garland and
Zula built a house five miles northeast of
Coleman, where they still reside. Mrs.
Abbey taught school at Lone Star. The
Abbeys are stockfarmers, who for many years
also raised turkeys. In 1938, they
bought their first registered Polled
Herefords and are still in that
business. Garland and Zula had two
children; Charlie still lives in Coleman
County, (see Charlie R. Abbey) and Wanda,
who graduated from Hardin-Simmons University
and did graduate work a Texas Tech
University, taught school at Aransas Pass,
Post and Lubbock for a total of 22
years. She owns a few acres at Santa
Anna and Valera. Wanda has three
children: Arlene, Carlos and Julia.
Arlene married Will Dilworth, they have one
son, Brandon.
