John
Richard Aaron was born July 1, in Indian
Territory Oklahoma, to Fances Mourning
Louisiana Swindell and James Robert
Aaron. In Eastland County December 21,
1913, John married Rebecca Jane Hoover, born
February 25, 1898, in Mason County, the
daughter of Mary Annie Coffey and William W.
Hoover. John and Becky moved to
Coleman County from Runnels County where
William Robert Benjamin was born October 26,
1914. After arriving in Coleman
County, another son, Avery Adis, was born
April 5, 1916. They traveled looking
for work, sometimes working on farms and at
other times on the railroads. During
these times Viola Evelyn was born January
11, 1918; Owen Washington, February 28,
1920, both in Colbert, Oklahoma; Lloyd Leon,
February 1, 1922, in Stevens County, died
March 3, 1922; Nitchel Thomas, November 5,
1923 in Brown County, died February, 1924 in
Comanche County.
On one trip to
Oklahoma the children took typhoid, two of
them; Robert and Evelyn died and were buried
at Throckmorton. They had four other
children before they finally settled in
Coleman County. These four were Bonnie Wayne
(Bob) born February 16, 1925; Mary Jean,
born June 10, 1927, both in Comanche County;
Jackie Dean was born and died September 11,
1929, in Brown County; and Otho Curtis, born
February 26, 1931 in Eastland County.
John and Becky returned to Coleman County
about 1932 in the Burkett area with the
surviving children and grandmother
Aaron. James Robert (grandfather) had
died in Oklahoma in 1918.
We lived on what was generally called the
"Goose Ranch," Adam's Crossing, and various
other farms around the Burkett area, where
we kids attended Burkett High School.
We lived around Burkett until about 1940,
when we moved to the Crossroads
Community. While we were living on the
Joe Hinds place, John and Becky saw
three of their four sons go off to the
Navy. Bonnie Wayne went off on his
18th birthday, February 16, 1943, to serve
on the USS Oxford. He was awarded
numerous medals including the Purple
Heart. Bob married Patsy Jackson, May
2, 1951. They had four children:
Douglas Wayne; Roxanne; Terry and Lisa
Renee.
Avery was called
(later in the war years) and served on the
USS Oregon with honors. He left at home his
wife (Auttie Mae Davis) and three
children. They later had two other
children. They were: Wayland Glenn,
born July 6, 1939; Bobby Ray, born May 23,
1942; Wanda Jean, born July 5, 1944; Richard
Dale, born July 22, 1946; Michael Lee, born
September 17, 1948; all were born in Coleman
County except Michael. Owen was called
to service and by the time he finished basic
training, the war had ended and he was sent
to start policing of Japan. He left at
home his wife, Inez (Magness) and three
sons: Donald Bruce, born February 14, 1943;
Billy Joe, born October 28, 1944; and Owen
Jr., born August 1, 1945. Mary Jean
married William Loved Helton Jr., son of
Agnes (Halmon) and William Loyed (Loy)
Helton Sr., July 8, 1943 (see Helton
family). Otho Curtis (O. C.) now lives
in California and has five boys and three
girls, all living. They are: Linda,
Eddie, Curtis Lee, Jerry Dean, Michael Lynn,
Danny Mark, Sherri, and Rebecca.
Shortly after 1944,
John and Becky moved to Brown County, where
John died February 8, 1976. His mother
was laid to rest in January, 1944. On
October 2, 1962, Avery died of cancer; on
July 10, 1969, Granny Hoover (Mary Annie
Coffey) died; on December 21, 1974, Michael
was killed in an auto accident; Owen died
July 12, 1977, and Wayland Glenn died in a
shooting accident December 4, 1977, all are
buried at Burkett.
John was an old time gospel preacher, played
the fiddle, and was a GREAT horse
trader. Becky resides at Leisure Lodge
Retirement Home in Coleman.
