ANSON GAME ... from the Abilene
Reporter News The Coleman Bluecats were looking for a smoother final tuneup for district, but they'll take Friday night's 47-24 win over the Anson Tigers. In a game marred by eight turnovers, 163 penalty yards and errant shotgun snaps, Class 3A Coleman downed 2A Anson because running back Kyle Boyet brought some stability to the game. The 190-pound senior workhorse pounded out 288 yards rushing and four touchdowns on 34 carries. "We didn't want a sloppy game like we had," said Coleman coach John Elder, whose 5-0 Bluecats won their 16th consecutive regular-season game dating to 2013. "We won the turnover battle early, but we didn't take full advantage of it. Then the penalty bug got us. "It was a sloppy game in the second and third quarters, but we finally got it straightened out with our running game in the fourth quarter. We wore them (Tigers) down with our offensive line and got Boyet running downhill. When we're able to do that, we're about to wear other teams down." Boyet, who began this season as Coleman's fullback but moved to tailback because of an injury, scored on runs of 11, 1, 8 and 8 yards. He also set up the game's final touchdown — a 1-yard run by quarterback Bryson Hammonds — with four runs totaling 42 yards. "Nah, honestly I didn't realize I had that many yards," Boyet modestly said of his 288-yard performance. "I didn't feel like a night like that. I guess I just got the yards one by one. "Our offensive line had their best game tonight. They stepped up big time and did a heck of a job tonight. "Yeah, I was the fullback when the season started and Hammonds was the tailback. Then our quarterback (Corder Norris) got hurt so we had to move around. It has worked out as well as it could have under the circumstances. Whatever works for the team," said Boyet, whose fourth-quarter 8-yard touchdown runs kept Coleman comfortably in the lead. Hammonds finished with 85 yards rushing, including the 1-yard touchdown. He also passed for 45 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown to Mason Burkey. The versatile Hammonds also caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Denton Allen on a reserve play with two seconds left in the first half. Anson got 169 yards passing and three touchdowns from quarterback Cade Baker, but the junior quarterback threw five interceptions that Coleman converted into four touchdowns. All three of Baker's touchdown passes were to Michael Stevens, who finished with three catches for 76 yards. Dustin Moore added 55 yards rushing, including a 12-yard touchdown, for Anson, which fell to 2-3. The Tigers open District 4-2A Division I play in two weeks against Archer City. Baker's two second-half scoring passes to Stevens pulled the Tigers within two touchdowns, but Coleman answered both challenges with its methodical running game. Coleman led 26-6 at the half after Anson lost five turnovers during the first two quarters, including four interceptions by four different Bluecats — Riley Harris, Burkey, Allen and Hammonds. The Tigers committed two turnovers the first three times they touched the football, including a fumble on the opening kickoff. Coleman converted three of Anson's five first-half turnovers into touchdowns to build the 20-point lead. The Bluecats failed to capitalize on the fumbled kickoff after a high shotgun snap led to a 13-yard loss. However, Coleman converted Burkey's interception into a touchdown after Hammonds gained a first down with a 15-yard run on fourth-and-12. Hammonds passed to Burkey for an 8-yard touchdown and a 6-0 Coleman lead with 5:52 left in the first quarter. Hammonds jump-started the Bluecats' next scoring drive with a 21-yard punt return to the Tigers' 41-yard line. It took Boyet only two runs to get the score — a 30-yard gallop followed by an 11-yard touchdown run that extended Coleman's lead to 12-0 with 4:45 left in the first quarter. Between turnovers, Anson threatened to make it a game as Mason Davis broke a 22-yard run that eventually led to Baker's 18-yard touchdown pass to Stevens that pulled the Tigers within 12-6 with 11:30 left before halftime. But Coleman regained the momentum after converting two Baker interceptions into two touchdowns in the final 1:46 of the half. The first interception set up Coleman at the Anson 47, and after 10 plays, Boyet's 1-yard scoring run increased the Bluecats' lead to 18-6 with 1:46 left before halftime. Hammonds returned the next Anson interception 33 yards to the Tigers' 35 with 1:26 left. But after two penalties for 25 yards against Coleman, it appeared the Bluecats had squandered another scoring chance. But on third-and-21, backup quarterback Allen took a handoff on a reverse and suddenly raised up and threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Hammonds, who handed off to Boyet to start the play. The touchdown pass, combined with Boyet's two-point conversion run, gave Coleman a 26-6 lead with four seconds left before halftime. Coleman is open next week and begins defense of its District 3-3A Division I title in two weeks against Post. 47, ANSON 24 Anson 0 6 12 6 — 24 Coleman 12 14 6 15 — 47
