Coleman 14 - Winters 13

Coach Ballard's Comments on the Winters Game

It was a great win for the Coleman Bluecats, and a great way to begin the 2011 season. The past couple of years, we have struggled in finishing close ball games. Friday night our kids finally finished a game and persevered when things got tough. It was a great booster for our kids confidence. I knew we would be able to match up with Winters physically, I am really proud that we answered the call and beat them mentally as well. We by no means played mistake free football, we have a great deal to work on before next Friday night’s game.

Next week’s ball game is versus Haskell Indians. They are a very disciplined team that traditionally has been successful. Last year they caught the injury bug and lost some key players that would have made them a force to be reckoned with. Coach Colley does a great job in getting his kids to play hard and physical. It will be a battle of two running teams, and just like so many other games, it will be a game that will be decided on who makes the fewest mistakes. Haskell’s offense is led by a speedy Isaiah Llewellyn who is a returning starter. We will need to a great job of keeping him contained or it could be a long night for us. Defensively, Haskell returns several starters, led by a very quick Jarred Escobedo, who does a great job of getting in the backfield and disrupting plays.

Varsity Players of the Week:
Defense: Reid Needham
Offense: Wayne Worsham
Special Teams: Dalton Allen
Big Block: Charlie Thomas

From the Historical Viewpoint - A New Record Was Set at Winters by Dela Garza!

An unusual CHS football record was broken Friday night, as far as known records go, with a 60-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Draven Dela Garza.  Very few fumble returns are carried back this far as defensive players are not normally fast enough to return fumbles for a touchdown.  The only other known fumble return for a touchdown over 50 yards was made by Francis McKaughn against Ballinger in 1925 and this was for 50 yards.

The Coleman High School Bluecats broke a 14 game losing streak after defeating Winters, 14 to 13.
