Welcome to Carson County, TXGenWeb!
Carson County was created in 1876 from the northern part of Bexar County and was organized in 1888 with Panhandle (the only town) as the county seat. Carson is located just east of Amarillo and Panhandle is a little south and west of the center of the county. It was named for the first secretary of state of the Republic of Texas, Samuel Price Carson. Ranching began in the county in the 1880s with the JA Ranch encompassing over a million acres (4,000 km2) within Armstrong County and five adjoining counties. After 1900, the water shortage in the area was solved by installing windmills. Next, the Borger Oil Field was discovered in 1925 and the county's population immediately doubled and several small towns sprang up. Carson has never had more than 8000 residents but the area is rich in history and culture.- On-Site Information
