Burditt Wells ~ ca 1925
Burditt Wells was developed by Dr. H. M.
Burditt in the 1870s near the western banks of the Clear Fork of Plum Creek. Dr.
Burditt established a post office in 1878 and became postmaster; however, the
office was discontinued the following year. In spite of the closure, Dr. Burditt
sold several thousand gallons of the mineral water. He then built a hotel to
accommodate visitors to the spa, and a spur was constructed from the San
Antonio, Aransas Pass railroad to the hotel. The business grew and a real estate
venture emerged to sell stock in the company. In 1910 a plat for a townsite was
registered in the courthouse. By the mid 1900s the end came, no town was built,
the hotel was torn down and the railroad spur was removed. The remains of the
rail lines can be seen today in several places along County Road 207.
