Adalia ~ ca 1873
Located 12 miles northeast of Lockhart, Adalia was established by Walter Rife in
1870 and named for his daughter Ada. Ranching was the primary source of income
but gradually gave way to grain and cotton farming. By 1890 a school had been
established with 17 students and rose to 37 in 1898. In 1901 Walter Rife
established a post office in his store and became its first postmaster. The
operation closed by 1904. Following World War I, the little town slowly
declined, and in 1930 the school consolidated with Lytton Springs, and the town
site ceased to exist during the 1970s.
