William E. Clinton

William E. Clinton, agent at Athens, Texas, for the southern
pacific lines was born near Commerce, Hunt County, Texas, in 1892. He was
reared on a farm and attended rural schools during his early boyhood,
after which he enrolled for two terms in the East Texas Normal, at
Commerce.
At the age of 18 years he began his career in railroad work and was
employed at different times by several Texas railroads.
In 1917, he took his service wit the Southern Pacific with which
corporation he has remained to the present time. Loyalty to the company's
interests and due regard to the business of the public which it serves
gained for Mr. Clinton an early recognition of his sterling qualities by
his company and his advancement was rapid until his service with the
company was interrupted by his enlistment in the U.S. Army in 1918 for
immediate railroad service overseas. In 14 days of the date of his
enlistment he was sent to France, being assigned to duty with the 21st
company Transportation corps, 14th Grand Division A. E. F. with which he
served 14 months.
He was married in 1922 to Miss Lena Mae Manning of Orange, Texas. A
member of the Christian Church, Mr. Clinton is active in the affairs of
his Church. He is a charter member of American Legion Post No. 1, at
Commerce. The first post organized in Texas.
He came to Athens as agent for the Southern Pacific, February 28, 1925,
and in the short period of one year has taken his place among those
citizens who are doing their utmost to keep Athens and Henderson county,
a good place in which to live. Mr. Clinton has a pleasing personality
that quickly inspires friendship in those whom he meets. His earnest
desire to serve his company and it patrons has made for him a place with
his company and with the citizenship of the county, that entitles him in
the fullest measure to high regard accorded him.
