John I. Wofford

Mr. John I. Wofford is one of the farmers of Henderson county who has
earned a mention in the column in The Review. He was born in this
county Jan. 20, 1856, near Fincastle. He attended school at Fincastle
and Kickapoo. His education consisted of a few years in the grade
schools, without any finish in a college or university. When he was a
youth the opportunities for an education were not as favorable as now.
The greater part of his life has been spent on a farm. He was engaged in
the livery business in Athens for a while several years ago. But he
returned to his first love, and as a farmer he has been a success. And
his success has been achieved by his own efforts. He started out
without any assistance in a financial way from any one. He has been
twice married, first on December 11, 1876, to Miss Lovonia Mullen. They
had five children, 4 sons and one daughter. His wife passed away
twelve years later. Mr. Wofford was remarried to Mrs. Adelia
Scarborough, who had been left a widow with two little girls, and who
was his first boyhood sweetheart. Mr. and Mrs. Wofford had eight more
children, and Mr. Wofford has educated them all to the best of his ability.
He has eight married daughters, and four married sons. His grand
children number thirty-six living, with two dead. He also has two great
grand children. A son, Bryan Wofford, was a world war veteran, and
came home in poor health.

While never a politician, Mr. Wofford has always been an active
Democrat, taking occasion to vote for good and capable men for office.
He has retired from active farm work, but owns extensive farms and
puts in his time looking after his interests. He is a progressive farmer,
and has been one of the men who has done a real service for
Henderson county. He is a member of the Christian Church, and an
all-round good citizen.

Having retired from the scene of active farming, Mr. Wofford now finds
time to travel a great deal with his wife, who enjoys the trips with her
husband immensely.
