Jack I. Wofford

Mr. Jack I. Wofford, the very efficient chief of police of Athens, was born
in Fannin county, Texas, Dec. 13, 1871, but came with his parents to
Henderson county when a small boy and has spent practically all his
life in this county. He was reared on a farm near Fincastle and it was
there and at Kickapoo that he attended school.

In 1886, when Mr. Wofford was a young fellow he came to Athens and
has made this his home ever since. His father, Capt. J. H. Wofford,
served Henderson county as a sheriff four years and it was under his
father that J. I. Wofford learned his first lessons as a peace officer. He
served as deputy sheriff under his father during his last term, and was
quite a youthful deputy. His father died in 1915.

Mr. Wofford was elected city marshal of Athens in 1901, and is now on
the job as chief of police. Few men ever have the honor of serving their
city as a peace officer for nearly a quarter of a century, but that is the
record of Mr. Wofford. He has served under many different city
administrations during his long career as chief of police. His efficiency
as an officer is the explanation for his long term of service with the city.

Mr. Wofford was married to Miss Valine Perry. They had one daughter,
who died in 1920.

In politics Mr. Wofford is one of the staunch democrats of Henderson
county, and is always active in the selection of men for office. He is a
member of the Knights of Pythias lodge. He is one of the famous
Wofford family of this county, and is one of the best citizens in Athens.
