Hugh A. Drane

Born at Corsicana, November 10, 1885, Hugh A. Drane was reared and received his education in that city. His father, F. N. Drane has for many years been among the foremost citizens and business men of Navarro county. Hugh's first employment after reaching manhood was in his father's hardware establishment where he remained only a few years, when with the advent of the automobile, he became interested in this new means of travel and was among the first in the city to establish an auto sales service and garage, and was among those pioneer devotees of the "buzz" wagon, to receive the maledictions of the populace, whose horse and mule drawn vehicles grudgingly gave full right of way to the streaking gas wagon. The automobile business occupied Mr. Drane's attention for fifteen years.

Becoming interested in the manufacture of ice, Mr. Drane was associated with the Southern Ice and Utilities Co., of Dallas for a few years when he came to Athens and took over the management of the obsolete ice plant here and at once set about the matter of making of it an up-to-date plant. An ambition in which he succeeded. After a few years, fire destroyed the old plant, but nothing daunted, Mr. Drane selected a new and better site and constructed a new plant, that represents not only the last word in ice making equipment, but is an example of civic beauty that would be more than a credit to any city anywhere in the United States.

Mr. Drane is a member of the Presbyterian Church, and is one of the up and doing members of the Athens Chamber of Commerce. He takes an intensive interest in all matters pertaining to the development of his home town and county, and accepts cheerfully every opportunity for service to the public that presents itself.

His achievement in giving to Athens and Henderson county a service in ice manufacture and distribution unequaled elsewhere in the State, and the making of his plant a beauty spot and play ground in the city places the City and County deeply in his debt and makes of him one of the foremost "men of affairs" in our section.
