1918 Draftees Were Fed With Fried Chicken

Twenty-four years ago today -- May 25, 1918 -- one hundred and eight men entrained from Athens for training camp . . . to make the world safe for democracy . . . to get Kiaiser Bill . . . and avenge the rape of Belgium.

Today, these same men's sons are going to the training camps, but for a better reason, we all believe.

But said the Athens Review of May 25, 1918:

"At one o'clock all but six of the men had reported to the local board. The board was kept busy making out mobilization papers. . . and as each man was given his papers, he was released until 12 o'clock, at which time they were taken to the Deen Hotel for dinner. The large sample room was fitted up as a dining room in order to take care of the men at one time. A chicken dinner, with all its accompaniments was a treat, and the boys did full justice to it.

"During the day they were givin free access to the Dixie Theatre and Chautaugua through the courtesy of the management of those institutions.

"The special trains on which the boys leave will not arrive until late this evening. The men were divided into two squads with Charles Pinkerton as captain of one and John Cain as captain of the other."
