Henderson County Negroes Contributed To The War  Effort

During World War II several hundred negroes of Henderson County were either drafted or volunteered their services in the United States Army. Three girls of color represented their group as volunteers in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps.
These colored soldiers served not only in every theater of war but in almost every branch of service. Many of these boys served as noncommissioned officers while others were awarded medals for good conduct, sharpshooters and expert riflemen. Several have been awarded the purple heart and one boy made the supreme sacrifice for his country.

Barrett, David
David Barrett, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Barrett. Entered the Army in Oct., 1942, trained at Moore Field and in Mission, Texas.

Beasley, Tommy, Jr.
Tommy Beasley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Beasley, Sr. Entered the Navy Oct., 1943, trained in Bainbridge, Md. Served in Italy, Africa and in the Philippines.

Blanton, Clifford
Sgt. Clifford Blanton, son of  Mrs. Blanche Blanton. Entered the Army in March, 1941, trained Camp Davis, N.C. and Ft. Ord. Cal. Served on Manilla.

Blanton, Will L.
S/Sgt. Will L. Blanton, son of Mrs. Blanche Blanton. Entered the Air Corps in Oct., 1941, trained in San Bernardina, Cal.

Brantley, Ross T.
Pfc. Ross T. Brantley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Smith Brantley. Entered the Army in Oct., 1942, trained at Camp Wallace, Texas and Camp Knight, Cal. Served in France and Italy; also in the Pacific.

Brown, Albert, Jr.
Pfc. Albert Brown Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Brown, Sr. Entered the Army Field Artillery in May, 1943, trained at Ft. Sill, Okla and Camp Beale, Cal. Served in England, France, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Australia and Hungary. Has American Defense, ETO Ribbon and three Battle Stars.

Brown, William J., Jr.
T/5 William Brown, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Brown, Sr. Entered the Army in Aug., 1942 trained at Elgin Field, Fla. Served in India and Burma. Has CBI Ribbon and one Bronze Star. Discharged.

Chambers, Earl, Jr.
STM 1/c Earl Chambers, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Chambers, Sr. Entered the Navy in July, 1944, trained in Bainbridge, Md. and San Bruno., Cal. Served on Guam.

Coit, Clifford
Cpl. Clifford Coit, son of Mrs. Gertrude Coit. Entered the Marines in Oct., 1943, trained at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Served on Marshalls and Guam.

Coit, Walter J.
Sgt. Walter J. Coit, son of Mrs. Gertrude Coit. Entered the Army in Sept., 1942, trained at Ft. McClellan, Ala. Served in New Guinea and Australia.

Daniels, Jeffie L.
Sgt. Jeffie L. Daniels, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Daniels. Entered the Army in March, 1944. Wife, former Maurine Royall. Trained in Louisiana and Massachusetts. Was on Okinawa.

Daniels, Kenneth
S 1/c Kenneth Daniels, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Daniels. Entered Navy in Oct., 1943. Trained in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York. Served on Okinawa, Honshu, Ie Shima. Wounded in the Pacific. Received the Purple Heart, PTO Ribbon and two Battle Stars.

Dotson, Deckard
Cpl. Deckard Dotson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Neil Dotson. Entered Army in 1941. Wife, former Florence Crayton. Trained in Texas, N. Carolina, California and Alabama.

Elam, George
Pfc. George Elam, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Elam. Entered Army in Oct., 1942. Trained in Georgia and Texas. Served in England, Germany and France. Received EAME Medal and three Bronze Stars.

Gordon, John
Pfc. John Gordon, husband of Margaret Lewis, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Gordon. Attended Athens school. Entered Army May, 1941, trained in Missouri. Served in England, Africa and Italy. Holds ETO Ribbon with two Battle Stars. Discharged in Dec., 1944.

Graham, Gilson T.
Cpl. Gilson T. Graham, son of Clay Graham and Pauline Barker. Entered Army July, 1942, trained at Key Field, Miss and MacDill, Fla. Served in Italy and France.

Hardie, Charlie
Sgt. Charlie Hardie, son Mr. and Mrs. James Hardie. Entered the Army in Feb., 1942, trained at Ft. Bragg, N.C. and Camp Butner, N.C. Served in England, France and Czechoslovakia.

Hardie, Willie

Hardie, Winifred

Hawkins, Clarence

Hill, Horace
Pvt. Horace Hill, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Hill. Entered Army in April, 1945. Trained in Albama. Received the Expert Rifleman Medal.

Kelley, John
Cpl. John Kelley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Kelley. Entered Army in June, 1942. Trained in Texas. Discharged.

Lane, George E.
Pvt. George E. Lane, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ned Lane. Entered Army in 1942. Trained in New Jersey. Served in Casablanca, Italy and N. Africa. Wounded in North Africa. eceived the Purple Heart. Discharged.

Lane, Luther T.
Pvt. Luther T. Lane, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ned Lane. Entered Army Air Corps in 1943. Trained in Texas, Tennessee and Utah. Discharged.

Lee, Paul L.
