UNION VETERANS OF HENDERSON COUNTY TEXAS

At the time of the 1890 U.S. census the Census Office undertook an enumeration of all veterans who had served in the Union forces during the Civil War. In addition to names of the veterans (and their widows, if deceased) the schedules were to include branch of service and unit served with, dates of enlistment and discharge, current post office address, disability incurred, plus "other information necessary for a complete statement of the veteran's term of service." Persons who served under assumed names were to be listed under their real names followed by their aliases.

Unfortunately the schedules as ultimately rendered were far from complete. More often than not some of the requested information was omitted, and in many cases we are able to learn only the name of the veteran, branch of service, county of residence and Civil District number. Nevertheless, since practically all the 1890 census other than the veterans census was lost or destroyed, even this sketchy information is valuable to genealogical researchers.

They the Census Office failed to produce complete schedules was not from the lack of trying. In addition to the customary house-to-house effort by enumerators (completed during the month of June 1890), records of the Pension Office were examined, Grand Army of the Republic post rosters procured, and request were made for State rosters, adjutant generals' reports, and similar documents. "Many thousands of letters were written to veterans to obtain information not obtained by the enumerators, and inquiries were published in about 500 newspapers throughout the country in order to elicit responses from veterans overlooked in the enumeration." (National Archives: Introduction to Schedules.) The microfilm is in the Tyler, TX Library Family History Section.
