Athens Full Gospel Church

North Prairieville Street

Construction of a new church building for the Athens Full Gospel Church is well underway in the 600 block of North Prairieville. The new building, which will have a sanctuary and several Sunday School classrooms, is being built on a lot next to the present meeting place at 605 N. Prairieville.  Work on the building was begun several months ago and the expected completion date is sometime in 1966.  Founder and present pastor of the church is W.L. Hampton.  He founded the church in Athens in December of 1958 with the first meeting held in a building which stood at the present location of the First Baptist Church parking lot.  He held services at the location until the present property was purchased three years ago. The church started out as a small mission but attendance has gradually increased to an average of 30 to 40 at each service.  Services are held on Thursday and Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. as well as on Sunday morning and evening.  The men's group holds a prayer meeting on Monday night and the women's group meets on Tuesday night ofr prayer services.  Edwin Brown serves his church as pianist and Mrs. Juanita Jackson directs the choir.
