First Baptist Church

The First Baptist Church located at Corsicana and Carroll St., is housed in a building finished in 1960 that is valued at approximately $600,000.  Pastor of the 106-year-old church is Rev Lee Ramsour.  The life of the church dates back more than a century to 1858 when a small group led by Elder R.R. Morrow and J.M. Reeves built a church in Athens.  The first church, located on South Prairieville St., was known as the Bethel Baptist Church.  Property at the corner of Carroll and West Corsicana Streets was purchased in 1892 and a structure was built there at a cost of $2,952.  The name of the church was then changed to Athens Baptist Church.  The church building was destroyed by fire during World War I, and in 1918 a third building was dedicated on the site that now houses the educational building. It as dedicated as the First Baptist Church.  Present offiecers of the church include E.W. Barron, chairman of deacons;  Mrs. Paul Conn, finance secretary; Mrs. John T. Watson, records secretary; Jake Townley, superintendent of the Sunday School; and Earl Youngblood, Training Union director.  Fisk Ray is minister of education.
