Negroes Have Day At Athens Exposition

Athens, Texas
Sept 19 1928
Wednesday was negro day at the East Texas Cotton Palace. Inspired by the showing made in agricultural products by the negroes, local business men raised sufficient money to place a negro county agent to the field and he was inaugurated Wednesday.
Judging was completed in all departments by noon. Murchison was awarded first place on community exhibit out of fifteen entries. Porter Luker of Murchison won first place in individual farm exhibit with sixteen entries.
Judges were unanimous in their opinion that the exhibits this year are among the best ever shown at the palace. Sixty and seventy pound watermelons were numerous while the corn exhibit was excellent. Henderson County has won first place in corn at the State Fair at Dallas for the last ten years and W. A. Dunn, the corn king, has again assembled an exhibit of corn that will be taken to the State Fair from here.
Athens Howitzar company under command of Capt. J. P. Pickens, will give a demonstration in trench warfare Thursday.
Friday the Sunset Bisons of Dallas play the Athens Hornets.
