In the 1860 Young County census, John A. Goodlett and his wife, Martha Goodlett were living at Belknap. John A. Goodlett was 35 years old and was born at Kentucky. John owned a dry goods store at Belknap. He was married Martha Goodlett. She was 20 years old and born at Mississippi. They had one child:

Fannie M. Goodlett, girl, 3/12 months, born Texas

John A. Goodlett was at Belknap by 1856 and worked as a freighter between Parker County and Young County. John purchased his first land in Young County in the town of Belknap on 7 September 1859. John served as a grand juror in district court cases at Young County. In the 1860 slave census for Young County, John A. Goodlett owned one 40 year old mulatto slave.

In 1861, when the Young County Clerk died, John A. Goodlett purchased his pistol, scabbard and bell according to county records. John sells his land moves away from Young County by 1862.

By 1869, John A. Goodlett was living in Weatherford, Texas possibly because of the Civil War and the Indian hostilities in Young County. Col. E.S. Graham, one of the founders of Graham mentions meeting Goodlett.

In the 1870 Parker County, Texas census, John A. Goodlett and his wife are living near Fort Worth, Texas. John A. Goodlett is 44 years old and a merchant. His wife, Martha S. Goodlett is 28 years old and born at Mississippi. The following children are in the household:

The 1870 census suggests that perhaps John and Martha Goodlett were living in Louisiana by 1862 when their son, John A. Goodlett was born.

The Weatherford Times shows that John A. Goodlett was living in Weatherford, Texas and owned a dry goods store by August 1871. John was mayor of Weatherford, Texas from 1872-1873.
