Comments: Cornelius "Neill" NICHOLSON, a white
land owner, and part of his family left Kemper Co., MS. abt. 1871, arriving
in Upshur Co.in the early part of 1872. His grandson, Neal, has always
said they had to leave
because the law was after his grandmother, Hannah, because
she was teaching black children how to read and write. She was a school
teacher, having been educated at the Yale Finishing School for Young Ladies
in
1841-1842. Cornelius, along with his 14 yr. old
son, Alexander, joined the 35th MS. Inf.Co.A in 1862 and has a confederate
marker at his grave in the Piney Grove Cem. His son,Alexander, also has
one. Alexander was
the father of my husband's grandfather, Neal.
