Reverend John Davis, Jr.

John Davis, Jr., who began his long and fruitful Gospel Ministry 34 years ago in rural Harrison County, died Sunday morning, August 22, 1976, in a Fort Worth hospital. He had battled valiantly against a weakened heart condition which had progressively grown worse for the past three years.

John was born January 2, 1901, in rural Upshur County to the late John Davis, Sr., Mary Francis Davis. He grew up in rural Upshur County, attended Public School there, and received his early Christian Education at the old Peters Chapel Baptist Church which had been organized on his
grandfathers farm. The church was later renamed East Springfield Baptist Church.

Following his schooling John moved to nearby Marshall, Texas and began work in the Texas & Pacific Railway maintenance shops. In Marshall he united with Mount Moriah Baptist Church. After being called to the Gospel Ministry, he was licensed to preach from the church in July of 1933.
One of his early pastorates was the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Marshall.

When the railway transferred him to their Fort Worth shops, Reverend Davis settled here. One of his little-known but proud accomplishments was the Sunday School Class he organized and taught during the lunch hour at the T & P shop. The little class grew and received the approval of the management at the shop. Men from all denominations, black and white, gave up their usual leisure time activities and studied with Reverend Davis. One of his coworkers, S. E. Adkins, became an
ardent Bible Scholar, and before long responded to the call to preach the Gospel.

Reverend Davis served as Pastor of Coleman Neal Baptist Church near Ennis in Ellis County and was serving there when he was retired from the Railroad.

He was called to the Pastorate of Mount Horum Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Worth. Under his administration Mount Horum was rebuilt on property across the street from the original site.
The Church has grown under his able leadership and many lives were touched, many souls were led to Christ and many inspired and helped. Earlier this year when ill health prevented his active pastoral duties, he asked the Church to accept the Reverend F. Moody, to carry on his pastoral duties during his illness.

Reverend Davis, also served as Chairman of the Ministers Conference and General Treasurer of the Elm Grove District Association until ill health forced him to surrender these offices.

Reverend Davis was married to the former Lula Mae Sipho on March 22, 1969, and she has been a constant and inseperable companion.

He is survived by his faithful and devoted wife, Mrs. Lula Mae Davis; his mother, Mrs. Mary Francis Mosley of Gilmer, Texas, a sister Mrs. Mae D. Smith of Mansfield, Louisiana, an aunt Mrs. Cora Schooler of Gilmer, several other relatives and a multitude of friends.
