SHADY GROVE CEMETERY
UPSHUR COUNTY, TEXAS
UPDATED: March 2009 - Geraldine
Little Braswell & Sandy Spann completely photographed & transcribed
Shady Grove Cemetery.
As hard as we all try, we are human and sometimes when reading a cemetery we
miss a grave covered with leaves, fireants, or bushes. Sometimes the headstone
has sunk and is mostly underground. Our area also has many graves only marked
with iron ore rocks and even many unmarked graves. There are headstones that
have long ago been destroyed by the elements or even vandalizm, and are hard
to impossible to read the details. We would appreciate it if you would let us
know if you did not find your relative which was buried here,
and would appreciate your letting us use the information you know about them.
With the combined efforts of us all, we can make the Upshur County website bigger
and better.
Thanks to Nancy Adams & Tom Mitchell for sending in their pictures.

Franklin "Frank" Langford, brother of Young Marion Langford (1831-1916)
and son of James Langford (1770-1854) and Candis Vinson (1800-1840).
He was born in Buena Vista, Bibb Co., Georgia which became Marion
County. During the Civil War he enlisted into Ham's Mississippi
Cavalry Regiment (Confederate Infantry) and served under Gen.
Forest & Robert E. Lee surrendering his arms at Appromatox
Courthouse, Virginia with Lee. His 1899 Civil War Pension application
showed he was living in Calloway, Upshur County, Texas, had one
acre of land valued at $25, two horses worth $30, a wagon worth
$10 and 2 cattle worth $20, six hogs worth $6 and $6 cash per
the application. He married Tennessee Price (1849-1913) and they
had one child who lived to adulthood, Mary Edna (1872-1950) who
married John T. Everidge and is buried in the same cemetery. Another
child was born and died in 1887 and buried next to Frank and Edna.
Frank was buried with his familiar hat on his head so as not to
delay his entry into heaven. His brother, with whom he
served in the Civil War, Young Marion Langford is buried in
the Little Mound Cemetery. |

Wade - Thomas Maberry, born in
Tennessee, the son of William Mabry
(born 1870 NC and living next door to him & siblings Miegs, Tn. in the 1850 census).
His wife was said to be named Sarah and I can find no other
children but Thomas J. Maberry (1849-1915). He is shown often living
with his sister, Elizabeth Maberry (1818-1879) who married Samuel B. Snow and lived in Wood County, Tx. He also
lived at times with their brother, John Maberry/Mayberry/Mabury
(born about 1806 to 1812 NC) and John's wife, Sarah/Sally (born
about 1810 NC). In the 1850 Federal Census Thomas
Maberry is living with John, Sarah, and the son attributed to
Thomas, Thomas J. Maberry (1849-1915) in Lawrence, Missouri.
During the Civil War he enlisted in Co. B, 2nd
Battalion, Arkansas Infantry, C. S. A. He enlisted in
Arkansas instead of Texas because his brother lived where this was
organized. |
