Piney Grove Cemetery

From Gilmer take Hwy 271 north to Bettie, turn left on FM 2088. Go to FM 2454, turn right, then go to FM 556 and turn left.  Take this road to FM 2455 and turn right. Stay on FM 2455 until you come to the Piney Grove Baptist Church, which will be on the left side of the road.  The cemetery is behind the church.

The cemetery is well kept, and enclosed in a chain link fence.

The reading begins from the front of the cemetery.

As hard as we all try, we are human and sometimes when reading a cemetery we miss a grave covered with leaves, fireants, or bushes. Sometimes the headstone has sunk and is mostly underground. Our area also has many graves only marked with iron ore rocks and even many unmarked graves. There are headstones that have long ago been destroyed by the elements or even vandalizm, and are hard to impossible to read the details. We would appreciate it if you would let us know if you did not find your relative which was buried here, and would appreciate your letting us use the information you know about them. With the combined efforts of us all, we can make the Upshur County website bigger and better.

Family member Ellen Nelson writes "He joined the militia in Alabama and then served in Company I, 40th Alabama Infantry, beginning May 14, 1862 in Mobile. He fought at Vicksburg and was paroled and then returned to serve in other areas of the South and was last paroled in North Carolina at the end of war. According to Walter Nelson, the food Wiley had at Vicksburg was pea soup and bread and dirty water. He and others had difficulty getting water because of leaving the trenches in direct line of fire."
