This cemetery is on FM 2088 about 2 1/2 miles W of Hwy 271, at the
Oak Hill Missionary Baptist Church. On Nov. 4, 1984, Carrie V. Johnson
deeded land to the Baptist Church at Oak Hill and their successors. The
earliest marked grave is Evalena Deen, b. 1870 d. 1870, daughter of J.L.
& M.E. Deen. On April 3, 1985, the Upshur County Oak Hill Cemetery
Association was incorporated as a non-profit, perpetual corporation. The
names of the incorporators are: J.M. Rutledge, Larry Johnson, June Johnson,
William Caldwell, L.E. Fannin, Grady Holmes, and Clyde Stracener.
Update March 2008 - Thanks go to Geraldine Little Braswell & Sandy
Spann for photographing the headstones in Oak Hill and allowing us to
post them online. This should make the cemetery transcription as
complete as possible through March 2008.
This information was compiled in 1997 by Cheyenne
Johnson and James Patterson. An update was done in March of 2000. This
information was kindly donated for our use by the Upshur County Historical
Commission.
Thanks to Nancy

Ronald Wade -
John Wesley Hackler, born in Tennessee, the son
of
Thomas Hackler born about 1808 Tn., and
Jane Moore born about 1810 Tn.
Married Ava Jane Davidson (1837-1892) and their children included
Allen Hackler born about 1856, Mary Hackler born about 1857, Adaline
Hackler born about 1858, William Francis Hackler born about 1860,
Andrew Jackson Hackler born about 1862, George Hackler born about
1862, Calvin Hackler born about 1865, Harris Franklin Hackler born
about 1868, James Henry Hackler (1869 ? 1956), Bell Hackler born about
1871, Minnie Hackler born about 1873, and Margaret Alice Hackler born
about 1876. Enlisted in Confederate Army in Co. H., 18th Texas Infantry (Ochiltree's) as a Private and mustered
out as a Junior Second Lieutenant. His enlistment date was on
June 26, 1862. He served in the Confederate Army until 1865 and
served as a nurse from November 1-22, 1862. The is was a time when
disease was killing many Texas soldiers, including JWH's brother,
William Hackler, who was in the same unit. After his service as
a nurse, JWH was made sergeant and eventually was promoted Junior
Second Lieutenant on December 14, 1863. He is mentioned in a
manuscript written by John C. Porter, who wrote about his experience
in the Civil War, where he also served in Company H. In the
manuscript, Porter describes the November 3, 1863 battle of Bayou
Bourbeaux, LA. Porter states: "We went into the fight that day,
with twenty-seven men in the Company; we had six wounded, to wit: A.
Johnson, mortally, T. P. Ails, W. L. Montgomery, T. S. McCurdy, W.
Lilly and Jesse Steelman, all slightly. We came out with only seven
besides the officers, whoso names, I think, should be recorded in this
book to wit: Joe and David Bailey, W. H. H. Cope, John Johnson, John
Freeman, Jonas Ervin amd myself (J. C. Porter). the officers were
Lieut. T. L. Skeen and Serg't Hackler. The remainder of the Company, I
am ashamed to confess, played out." After serving as Sheriff,
John Wesley Hackler became Judge of Upshur County. |
