HOPEWELL CEMETERY
Our thanks go to the Upshur County Historical Commission
for allowing us to use their reading of Hopewell Cemetery. The reading
was done by: Thurman Hearn, Thurman Cagle, Durward Amos, Finley Tucker,
Garland Bullock, and Curtis Hart. It was completed June 1, 2000. Thanks
also go to Lea
Ann Tedford for the use of her partial reading. We have merged
the two to help insure no one was missed. There are many unmarked graves,
and graves marked only with native rocks.
Update: Thanks to Billy L Thompson,
Sue Kennington, and Fendley Tucker, Secretary/Treasurer of the
Hopewell Cemetery, for the recent update. This should make
the listing current through May 24, 2009.
Update: Thanks to Sandra L Spann & Geraldine L Braswell for completely
photographing the cemetery in April of 2008!
Thanks
to Kim Wolff & Sondra Petty Nicholson for the use of their
pictures.

Sarah Elizabeth Coffey
May, born in Mississippi, the daughter of David Anderson Coffey
(1836-1880) and Elizabeth McCoy (1846- ). She married Stephen Jackson
May (1872-1952) and they were parents of at least two children, Iva Bell
May born 1903 and Tom May born 1911. She and her family lived at the
corner of the road leading to Latch overlooking the Hopewell Cemetery
and she was know to one and all as "Granny May." She was also well
known for her home cures and home-made objects to use about the home.
Most of all she was known for her philosphy and sayings "Your children
walk on your feet when they are young and walk on your heart when they
grow older." "What is good to live by is good to die by." An ancient
model-A sat in the garage in front of their old homeplace until the
garage all but fell down and long after she died. She was midwife to
many if not most of the children in the Hopewell-Latch area when a
doctor was not available yet. It was said that she and her husband had
Indian blood. Submitted by Ronald Wade. |
