Master Sergeant Harold Beasley served in the Army
Air Corps and was stationed at Clark Field, on the island of Luzon in
the Philippines during WWII. When the base was overrun by the Japanese
in 1942, the soldiers fled to the jungles where they were protected by
the local guerrilla forces. Ultimately captured by the Japanese, Harold
was a participant in the ?Death March? that originated on the Bataan
Peninsula. He was imprisoned first at Bilibid, and later at the prison
camp at Cabanatuan. After three years of incarceration, the prisoners
were freed in raid by a force of U.S. Army Rangers and Filipino
guerrillas. Harold was retired as a master sergeant and lived thereafter
in Gilmer, TX, the owner/operator of the local Texaco station.
