Brumley Crossroads
Cemetery
click on picture to see it full size
Per Martha Bishop: The dedication of
the historical marker for the Historical Brumley
Crossroads cemetery was on November24, 2013. Trustees as
of 05/15/2019 are Virginia Beckham Carroll, Martha M
Bishop, Sue Humphreys, and Karen F Cunningham. The
marker is just inside the gate of the old cemetery.
Inside the fence is also where the original site of the
old Mt. Gilead Baptist Church was located (begun in 1848
although a few of the graves may be older, we have no
way of knowing since they have no markers or names or
records). After the church was gone, the area where it
stood was also used for the cemetery and burials still
occur occasionally.
Update: September 2011 - Some individual submissions
were sent in that should have been in the Camp County
Crossroad cemetery. They have been removed. Updated: March
2009 reading complete with photos by Geraldine
Little Braswell & Sandy Spann. Read by Maribeth Buce July 1, 2001.
Thanks to Jane Eubanks, Peggy Allen, & Regina Duffey
for sharing their pictures.
As hard as we all try, we are
human and sometimes when reading a cemetery we miss a
grave covered with leaves, fire ants, or bushes.
Sometimes the headstone has sunk and is mostly
underground. This area also has many graves only
marked with iron ore rocks and even many unmarked
graves. There are headstones that have long ago been
destroyed by the elements or even vandalism, and are
hard to impossible to read the details. We would
appreciate it if you would let us know if you did not
find your relative which was buried here, and would appreciate your
letting us use the information you know about them.
With the combined efforts of us all, we can make the
Upshur County website bigger and better.
Please
report incorrect or missing information to the
