As hard as we all try, we are all human
and sometimes when reading a cemetery we miss a grave covered with
leaves, fireants, or bushes. Sometimes the headstone has sunk and
is mostly underground. Our area also has many graves only marked
with iron ore rocks and even many unmarked graves. There are headstones
that have long ago been destroyed by the elements or even vandalizm,
and are hard to impossible to read the details. We would appreciate
it if you would let us know if you did not find your relative which
was buried here, and would appreciate
your letting us use the information you know about them. With the
combined efforts of us all, we can make the Upshur County website
bigger and better.
Cemetery History Marker & Wilkinson headstone photos submitted by Clarine S Tucker. Clarine & her sister Mary Nell Floyd had markers made and set for the Wilkinsons in 1997.

Barker, W O |
Feb 16, 1816 |
Mar 2, 1874 |
Per Ronald Wade - Dr.
William Oliver Barker Jr., born in South Carolina, the son
of William Oliver Barker Sr (1787 – 1857) and Elizabeth Dollar (1787 – 1858). In
1850 at Bethlehem, Upshur Co., Tx. he married Julia A. Crain (1828 – 1884). Their
children included Mary Ann Barker (1851 – 1926), Dr. William Louis
Barker Sr. (1852 – 1921), Susan Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Barker (1855 –
1921), Julia Barker (1857 – 1880), and Hallie Eugenia Barker (1860
– 1888). Dr. Barker was a student of the famous Morgan H.
Looney school of Gilmer, Upshur Co., Tx. His family wrote "He studied extensively in
Charleston, Philadelphia, and New York, becoming a fine linguist
and "highly cultivated in all his tastes". He also told of W.O.
Barker, who seems to have preferred using initials only, going
first to Tuscaloosa. Alabama in 1840 to practice, arriving in
texas in 1846. Serving probably in the series of communities he
finally settled in South East Upshur County near "Pine Tree" which
later became Bethlehem. There he married Julia A. Crain
(1828-1884), who had come to Texas from Hinds County, Mississippi
with her father, Lewis Crain (b. 1787). W.O. Barker became a
physician-farmer of eastern Texas, owning about 1000 acres up to
1868. He moved to Dallas during part of 1869, posting an
advertisement in the growing town which stated he would "visit
patients at any hour, day or night", giving "special attention to
women and children". Returing to the 30 acres he had kept in
Upshur County, he was stricken a few years later with his final
illness." Dr. Barker would certainly have served in the
Civil War or sent a "replacement" but I find no records for him. |
