History of Mt. Pleasant District Number 50

Some thirty years ago - there stood about ten miles south and a little east of Merkel the little Rock Crossing School House, a poorly constructed and rudely equipped one-room structure, erected by the people of the community. By 1903 the country in that section was sufficiently developed that conditions demanded a division in order that the children might have better educational advantages. Mt. Pleasant District represents one of these divisions made, the formal organization of this district taking place in 1909. A two-teacher school taught in a building donated by the patrons was opened the same year. In 1918 the district voted a $2400 bond and increased its tax to twenty cents. A modern three-room frame building, one of the neatest and best in the county, was erected that year and was well equipped for two teachers, with the thought of a third in the future. The following year, in order that the school might be eligible to receive State Aid, the tax was increased to fifty cents and the Aid was given at that time and has been received each year since. A number of patrons of the school, among whom may be mentioned Mr. C. F. Curb, have gladly worked for and watched the progress of this good district. The name "Mount Pleasant" was given by the citizens of the district and is indicative of the .thought and desire held for the school. An election for a dollar tax is now pending at Mount Pleasant; with the type of people who will go to the limit for their school, the district should continue to be well named - "Mount Pleasant."

Miss Marv Lou Miller and Mrs. Ollie Barnes were the teachers this school year; they worked hard and their good services were appreciated by the community.
