History of Cedar Gap District Number No. 3

History of Cedar Gap District Number 3 In the southern part of the county is a chain of cedar-covered mountains, marked by the two well-known gaps - on the east Cedar, on the west Buffalo. Just after one has passed through the east gap and filled his nostrils with the scent of the fragrant cedars, he comes to a school house - Cedar Gap. It stands on the Cedar Pike, fourteen miles from Abilene and four miles from Tuscola. The first building for this district was erected in 1881- an old-fashioned, one-room, log house, scantily equipped. There were no desks, splits logs being used for seats. In 1900 a two-story frame building was erected just across the road from the site to the present building; it was supplied with old-fashioned doubled desks. At a cost of fifteen hundred dollars, the substantial concrete building now in use was constructed some five years ago by Mr. R.E. Standard, the concrete blocks being made on the ground. It is a two-room structure with a vestibule, having cloak rooms on either side. The space and equipment are about adequate to well accommodate the sixty children of the district. The play-ground equipment was added this year and is rightly a source of pleasure and pride. The good, earnest teachers of this year are Miss Monterey Miller and Miss Lois Gorman, the latter having been in the school two years.
