Charles Norman Bright, son of Charley and Winnie Dunn Bright, was born September 17, 1936, during the flood of ’36, in Sterling City. Dr. Swann had to wade in water up to his boot tops on 2nd Street to deliver him at his Grandmother Dunn’s house. The Sterling City depot picture has Charles’ grandfather, Charley Dunn, standing by his Dunn Bros. Transfer co. Wagon and two white horses. Charles joined the navy in 1955 as a Seaman, spent 30 years on active duty and retired December 31, 1985, at the rank of commander. Among his duty stations as an enlisted man were San Diego, CA, Newport, RI and New London CT. He was accepted in the Navy enlisted Education Program in 1960 and attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN where he grated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. As an officer, he served aboard several destroyers; among them were the USS Wedderman, USS Radford, USS Haverfield, USS Charles Berry and the USS Hamner. The last six years of his naval career were spent in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, serving on the Third Fleet Staff working and Reserves. In his navy life, he was in Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Rhode Island, Washington and Viet Nam. The last nine years of his life were spent teaching and inspiring students at Phillips College and the Southwest School of Electronics in Austin. He died at his home in Austin on February 12, 1998, of natural causes and is survived by his wife Patsy; daughter Kenda; grand children Joshua and Marah, mother, Winnie Bright. sister, Elgene Whittaker; and brothers Chester and Jimmy Bright. Also surviving are an aunt, Mrs. C.J.Dunn of Sterling City and first cousins; Pat Dunn Porter of Big Spring, Carolyn Dunn Wright and Darla Kay Dunn Root of Kerrville, Johnny King of Rochelle, Harry King of big Lake, Janell King Groves of Big Spring, Boyd Carpenter of Bakersfield CA, Bobby Dunn of Clint, Barba Dunn Clanton of Blooming Grove and Beverly Dunn Howard and Betty Dunn Glass of Sterling City. Commander Charles Bright will be buried at sea.
