Gena E. Nelms, 71, died at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, 1988, in Stephens Memorial
Hospital following a sudden illness.
Services were at 2 p.m. Thursday at Morehart Mortuary with the Rev. Johnny
Barrett officiating. Burial was in Caddo Cemetery directed by Morehart Mortuary.
Born Gena Elizabeth Stallings, May 26, 1917, in Denton, She moved to
Breckenridge in 1929 and graduated from Breckenridge High School.
She married Denver L. Nelms in Breckenridge Dec. 25, 1937.
She and her husband operated the Caddo Mercantile Store fro 1960 to 1982. For
the past 15 years they had read meters for Stephens County Rural Water District.
She was a member of Caddo Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of Breckenridge; two sons, Dr. Ronnie L. Nelms of
Sherman and Kenneth B. Nelms of St. Jo; a brother, Dr. Cameron Stallings of
Huntsville; a sister, Jackie Thomason of Garland; six grandchildren, Melinda
Nelms of Austin, Dona Jones of Garland, Deanna Kirkland of Slaton, Heather Nelms
of Sherman, Kenneth Wade Nelms and John Mark Nelms, both of Saint Jo; and a
great-granddaughter, Leah Kirkland of Slaton.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, A.B. Stallings.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Disease Association and may be left at
Morehart Mortuary.
Pallbearers were Lester Atkinson, Glibert Ball, Jim Bob Coody, T.C. Harris Jr.,
Ken Henson and Jack Roberts.
