Welcome
Starr County was created 10 Feb 1848 from Nueces County. It's located on the Mexican border, about 85 miles from the coast and is named for James Harper Starr, who served as secretary of the treasury of the Republic of Texas (not after outlaw Belle Starr). The county seat is Rio Grande City. In 1852, a large portion of eastern Starr County became Hidalgo County; in 1860, part of the western side of Starr County became Zapata County and in 1911, part of northern Starr County became Brooks County. Be sure to check those counties if your families lived in those areas.
