"MR. MARION DANSBY, the young county attorney of Rockwall County, died Saturday with pneumonia. He had moved from Kaufman to Rockwall about one year ago. He leaves a widowed mother and several brothers and sisters." Texas Methodist Newspaper, July 01, 1882, Vol. XXVIII #41

"REV. JOHN WESLEY SHERWOOD, born October 25, 1833, Indiana. Moved with his father’s family of six children to Kaufman County, Texas in the spring of 1845. Married MISS TABITHA ANN SCROGGIN February 3, 1857, died at his residence in Rockwall County March 9, 1882. He leaves a wife and eight children and three brothers, one of who is REV. C. J. SHERWOOD; also three brothers, two of whom are REV. T. E. and J. F. SHERWOOD." Note: Rev. J. Sherwood was submitting news to the Texas Christian Advocate, another publication in 1859.

"A Rockwall man named RATCLIFF committed suicide last week by drinking hartshorn [Ammonium carbonate, also known as Smelling Salts], which was prescribed for his sick wife. He then jumped in a well and drowned himself."

"Rowin Tucker, 19 month old son of Mr. and Mrs. JAMES TUCKE, died of typhoid fever on the 19th inst. Buried at Rockwall family burial grounds."

"Thursday the remains of JOHN OSWELL HEATH were laid to rest by East Trinity Masonic Lodge, of which he was its first charter member and first senior warden. Born in Virginia in 1918, moved to Kentucky while in his youth; thence to Texas in 1846. He lived in four different counties, yet never having moved. First in Nacogdoches, then in Henderson, which was cut off the big territory, then Kaufman, and later Rockwall. He assisted in the organization of Kaufman County and was one of the commissioners appointed by the legislature in 1873 to organize the county of Rockwall. Appointed postmaster in April 1949 at Black Hill, which was his residence. Appointed Captain in the separate battalion, second brigade, for the county of Henderson in Jun 1847, being the first army officer in this part of the state. Was appointed justice of the peace by Gov. Sam Houston in 1860. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1862 and was 1st Lt. in Capt. C. L. Jones’ company, Stone’s brigade. Member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for over fifty years, a Mason for forty-three years. He leaves a large family of children, among whom is the Hon. E. C. HEATH, once candidate for Governor."

"JOHN HEATH, born Virginia in 1818, moved to Kentucky while still in his youth, thence to Texas in 1846. His fourth wife survives him. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1862 and was 1st Lt. in Capt. C. L. Jones Company, Stone’s brigade. He leaves a wife and large family."

"Mrs. A. L. HAY and her little two year old child burned to death. Mrs. Hay while laying dying stated to her aunt ‘I am burned to death; you will have to wrap my body in sheets for burial.’ She was alive when her husband arrived from Rowlette. He saw his child’s charred remains and the unrecognizable form of his dying wife."

"Mrs. Harrison Howell, mother of Dr. J. and J. A. C. Howell, died near Chisholm Thursday and was buried in the Chisholm Cemetery Friday. Her husband had died only a few weeks ago."

 

Terrell Transcript – Dec. 28, 1902
"The little girl of MR. DOWD, living near Heath, died Saturday when the horse she was riding became frightened and ran away. Her foot hung in the stirrups and she was dragged a mile and a half. When the horse finally stopped, her head was found to be mashed into a pulp from the contact with the horse’s hoof."

"Mr. J. N. MILLS died at Heath Wednesday and buried in Heath Cemetery, Rockwall County, Texas. He was born March 20th, 1820 in Pobworth Parish, Gloucester, England. He was married to Miss SARAH HORTON, February 28, 1842. Six children were born, but only two are living - T. P. MILLS of Forney and MRS. L. N. RITER of Hamlin. He came to America in 1850, landing at New Orleans, but located in Edwards County, Illinois. His first wife died in 1855. He married again to MISS SARAH MATHERS and they had six children, only living is W. A. MILLS. His second wife died and he married the third time to MRS. MARY PRICE and they had four children, all dying young. After the death of his third wife, he married MRS. I. E. HOLT on February 28, 1881" [1908]

"Harrison Howell of Chisholm, died last evening. He was born in Lauderdale County, Alabama seventy-nine years ago. He came to Texas in 1865. Two of his children J. A. C. and Dr. J. L. Howell survive him. He was buried in the Chisholm cemetery. Terrell Transcript, March 01, 1900- Harrison Howell, an old citizen of Chisholm, died February 21. William Hickford died at Rockwall at age sixty-five or seventy. He was reared in New Orleans, moved to Rockwall from Terrell about twelve or fifteen years ago. Burial in Rockwall cemetery.

 

Terrell Daily Transcript, November 03, 1905-William Hickford was a Union soldier, enlisting from New Jersey in an Illinois regiment and discharged at the end of the war at New Orleans. His heirs will come from New Orleans to claim his property.

Dr. Hal V. Manson died at age sixty-four at Rockwall. He was a confederate army veteran. Born Lebanon, Tennessee; came to Texas thirty years ago and settled at Rockwall. Member of Co. ‘H’, 7^th Regiment and lost a leg at the battle of Gettysburg. (Two articles)

George C. Ater, a patient at the asylum, died at age forty-five today. He was a prominent school teacher at Rockwall. His wife is in Garden City {Cass County}, Missouri. The remains will be taken to Ohio

Capt. M. S. Austin died at his son’s home in Rockwall at age seventy-five years. He was a native of North Carolina. He was formerly of this city. He served throughout the civil war, losing an arm. He returned from the war, he settled in Rockwall county. He served as a sheriff and tax collector for eight years for Rockwall county. Terrell Daily Transcript, December 11,1906- Born Stanley county, North Carolina on January 1, 1828. Married Miss Margaret E. Dumas in 1848. In 1854 became possessed of a large plantation near Black Hawk {Carroll County}, Mississippi. Joined Company ‘E’, 52^nd North Carolina regiment, Heath’s division and Longstreets corps in the summer of 1861. He was chosen first lieutenant and made captain of it in 1862, and served in that capacity until the battle of Gaines’ Mill in 1864, in which he lost his right arm. He also was wounded in the third day’s fight at Gettysburg, and received a bullet in the hip in the Wilderness. He was honorably discharged from the army and returned to his family in Richmond county, North Carolina, arriving there on his birthday in 1865. After the war he moved his family to Black Hawk, Mississippi until 1871, when he moved to Texas, locating three miles south east of Dallas. The next year he bought 320 acres of land southeast of the town of Rockwall. He and his wife had nine children, five sons and two daughters and five of these survive him; Judge L. J. Austin, W. D. Austin, Mrs. Lillie Jordan, Mrs. Cornelia Keahey and Dr. J. L. Austin all of Rockwall. In 1879, Dr. Clarence Austin, his oldest son died, one son Preston I. Austin lives in this city. The mother of the above died in 1902. In 1904, Captain Austin married Mrs. M. L. McClendon, widow of P. A. Poetry- "Grandma" Bourn, living near here, died last night of paralysis, at age seventy-five. Interment at Camp Ground. She moved to Rockwall in 1858, which was part of Kaufman county at that time. F. M. Sprawls died in west Terrell this morning at age sixty-four years. He leaves a wife and four daughters; Mrs. Bessie Howell, Misses Beuna, Beula and Eula Sprawls. Frances Marion Sprawles was born August 4, 1842 in Mississippi. Came to Texas and lived in Collin, Rockwall and Kaufman Counties. He has been a resident of Terrell for twenty-three years. Rube Bourne died at Poetry this morning at age eight-one years. He had lived at Poetry for about seven years, coming from Rockwall county. He was a native of Missouri. His wife died a number of years ago and he is survived by a son, R. L. Bourne of Poetry and three daughters. The cause of death was paralysis. L. D. Barr, step-son of Judge Irvine of Johnson’s Point died in Rockwall county on the 23^rd inst. He was the only brother of Mrs. Florence Massey of this city. He was kicked by a horse in the side and in a few hours fever set in and developed into typho-malarial typo. He was buried near his home, some three miles from Rockwall. He was born in Georgia in 1850 and married six years ago to Miss Callie Payne of Louisiana, by whom he had two children. His wife, two children, aged mother and two sisters survive him.

Capt. J. W. Fender, who had lived in Terrell for many years and now lives in Ft. Worth for the last eighteen months, was run over by a train. He has two brothers of this county, R. N. Fender of Kaufman and N. H. Fender of Terrell, a brother-in-law Hon. A. R. Harman, county judge of Rockwall. (Obit)

Ex-County Treasurer Powers, who was sometimes adjudged insane died in Terrell asylum last Saturday. His remains were shipped Monday to Rockwall for burial.

Lawrence Times, June 21, 1877 (Rockwall, June 15^th) George W. Garner murdered A. C. Starks. Garner’s wife procured some poison; visited her husband in the jail and they both were found dead. Some evidence indicated that she had a broken neck. They were both buried in the same grave. (Details)

 

Terrell Times Star, November 29, 1890: Saturday

Mr. P. A. Johnson died last Sunday in town and buried the same day at McClendon, Rockwall county. Terrell Times Star-December 07, 1890- Mr. Johnson died Saturday November 22^nd after a sickness for ten months. He was an old citizen of Terrell and was nearly 64 years old. He leaves a wife and two little children.

J. J. Pierce, justice of the peace of Fate, Rockwall county, committed suicide at Dallas last Thursday because he could not quit drinking. He was born in Mississippi and was about 25 years old and has a wife and a sister that lives at Forney.

Mrs. Mary Boydstun died last Friday at the residence of her son-in-law, A. B. Gardinhire and buried in the family burying ground on the old homestead. Mr. and Mrs. Boystun settled near the town of Rockwall. She was 73 years and 6 months of age. { Mary E. Boystun January 21, 1819 - July 22, 1892, w/o Ben F. Mrs. Klutts, wife of J. H. Klutts, died last Saturday and was buried at McLendon {Rockwall County}. She leaves a husband and three children, one a babe, scarcely a week old.

Rockwall- Mrs. W. M. Perrill died Monday at the residence of Mrs. Catherine Stout, where she has been stopping since her return from Chicago. She was the lady shot by her husband, Judge W. M. Perrill September 28^th last. Her death was caused by peritonitis (inflammation of the membrane of the bowels). She had been in Chicago for her health. The inquest ruled her death by natural causes. Her body was shipped to Hillsboro {Hill County} for burial.

Last Saturday, J. H. and B. I. Cockrell learned that their father , Mr. J. R. Cockrell was dying. He lived near Royse. He died soon after their arrival. Mrs. Tommie Rupard, wife of M. C. Rupard, died at Dallas. Mrs. Rupard, nee Dean, was born Rusk county September 4, 1865 and married September 3, 1883 to D. F. Bowman at Rockwall. Three years later he died, leaving her with three children. Christmas day, 1887, she married M. C. Rupard and moved to Terrell four years later. She was buried in the Chisholm cemetery. She leaves a husband and three children, mother, and several brothers and sisters.

Obit of Prof. J. W. Barrow from McCoy, Texas November 24, 1895. He was born December 28, 1895, Onslow County, North Carolina. William B. King, vice president of the United States was closely related to his mother. The Barrow family before the war was the largest slave holders in the south. He fought in the war between the states for the Union army. He came to Texas and settled at Collin county. There he married Sarah Coffman, daughter of John Coffman, near kinsman to David Kaufman. They moved to somewhere in southern Texas, then back to Rockwall county. From there he moved to Terrell. He leaves four sons and a daughter. He has a brother, Judge J. C. Mrs. Gafford, her two sons, age eight and ten, came to Terrell with a man who claimed to be her husband, which he wasn’t. She gave birth to a child soon after coming here. The family was assisted with their meals by a church group. She later died. Her father, Mr. Jones of Rockwall, finding out where she was now living, came to see his daughter. Mrs. Gafford’s husband died last August. Her infant was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Mohan. She was buried Sunday and her father took the two boys home with him. F. J. McCreary was declared insane by a jury at Rockwall last week. He is the victim of a remarkable line of misfortunes that have unbalanced his mind. His home burned about the first of July a year ago with no insurance; about a week later one of his children died and a few days another child died, and the day it was buried his wife died. Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Briggs was buried at Chisholm Sunday. She died at the home of her son, Bud Briggs Saturday. She was eighty-seven years, five months and twenty-seven days of age and a native of Alabama. She had been residing in Chisholm for almost thirty years. Dr. J. Connor Chisholm, 36 years old, died of pneumonia in Dallas last night. He was educated in Philadelphia, came to Dallas twelve years ago and was city chemist under Mayor Curtus P. Smith. He was the inventor of what is known as the Chisholm process of refining oil. He is survived by his wife and parents, Judge and Mrs. J. H. Chisholm of Rockwall. The Dallas Morning News this morning reports the death of J. H. Floyd, father of Ike Floyd, the latter of whom had made Terrell his headquarters for many years. (Rockwall, Aug 21^st ) J. H. Floyd, 72 years old of Rockwall, died Sunday of blood pressure of the brain. He moved from East Texas to Dallas County in 1875 and later moved to Rockwall County. Terrell Daily Transcript, January 31, 1920: Sunday

Nathan Thomas died at his home in Lewisville, Denton County, Texas yesterday. Interment at College Mound today. He was born in Washington County, Arkansas, near Fayetteville on October 1^st, 1841. In 1859 he came to Texas and settled near Rockwall, residing there until he enlisted in the Civil War as a Confederate soldier. Following his discharge, he came back to Rockwall. A wife and four children survive; W. F. Thomas, Mrs. Alex S. Ayers and Lee Thomas of Terrell and Mrs. J. A. Nash of Lewisville. In 1867 he married Miss Catherine Lancaster and two children were born, Mrs. J. A. Nash and W. F. Thomas.

Royse City, Texas - W. H. Adams, Jr., twenty-four years old was killed and his brother Jesse Adams, twenty-six years was seriously injured in an automobile accident near Rockwall yesterday when one of the casings on a front blew out. Editor’s note: The two men are sons of Hamp Adams of Rockwall County and a brother Jasper Adams of this place and a sister living in Ables Springs community. Postmaster A. H. John Freudiger died Saturday at his residence at 916 North Catherine Street. Interment Sunday in Oakwood Cemetery with pallbearers: Harry Campbell, J. H. Cockrell, J. R. Hamilton, Charles Rankine, P. A. Lechner, C. H. Nebhut; honorary:(lists 9 men) He was born in Lengenthal, Canton Bern, Switzerland February 16, 1842. He was seventy-nine years six months and four days of age. He was a member of the Reformed Protestant Church and an officer in the Swiss army, being in the war between Switzerland, Germany and France in 1870 and 1871. He landed in New York April 24, 1879 and located in Harrison County, West Virginia, near Clarksburg and lived there until 1883, when he came to Texas and located in Rockwall County and lived there until 1890, moving to near Poetry and had been a resident of that place for twenty-four years. November 1914, he moved to Terrell. He was the father of twelve children, all of whom are living, except the oldest, Albert, who died three years ago. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emma Freudiger, Mrs. Bertha Yates of West Virginia, Mrs. C. Zollner of Dallas, Mrs. H. C. Maison , Mrs. M. L. Sullivan and Mrs. W. W. Johnson of this city, Mrs. J. E. Ward of Malakoff; sons, J. H. Freudiger of Vernon, Texas, E. C. Freudiger of Denver, Colorado, John and Fred Freudiger of this city, also grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. J. J. Ogles died yesterday at Grand Saline {Van Zandt County} and buried today in Oakland Cemetery. He was 72 years of age and formerly resided here. He was the father of Mrs. M. B. Shipley of this place and a brother to Elam Ogles of Grand Saline. Terrell Daily Tribune, March 27, 1922 -J. J. Ogles was born in Gibson County, Tennessee June 27, 1850. He was married to Anna McGinnis in April of 1868. Two children were born, Mrs. M. B. Shipley of this city and J. A. Ogles, deceased. He came to Texas in 1884, settling at Rockwall, later moving to Terrell. He was a member of the Methodist Church. One child survives, Mrs. M. B. Shipley, two brothers, M. S. and E. F. Ogles, both of Grand Saline, two sisters, Lizzie Neely of Durant, Oklahoma and Ann Bain of Cameron, Tennessee, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Emma V. Moore was married to C. A. Sebastian December 15, 1874 in Georgia. She was born in Tennessee and moved to Georgia at age four or five years old, born March 13, 1857 and died February 15, 1922. Interment in Chisholm Cemetery February 16, 1922. Three sons were born, Carl, Will and Arthur, all living on the home place in Rockwall County. Mr. and Mrs. Sebastian came to Texas in 1876, settling Dallas County, where they remained for one year, moving to Rockwall County January 1878. Royse City - G. W. Monroe, fifty years old of this place was struck by lightning and instantly killed yesterday while riding a horse on one of his farms three miles east of town. He had lived here more than thirty years. He is survived by his wife and seven children, Mrs. George Griffith of Waxahachie and Mrs. Sam McMurray of Royse City and five younger children at home. L. Smith, Abilene, Texas; Mrs. L. D. Moss, Sagina, Texas, Mrs. L. D. {sic} Hobbick, Hot Springs, Arkansas; Mrs. S. T. Young and Mrs. Mack Fife of this city. Richard Hutt Hale was born in Jonesboro, Tennessee, August 11, 1839. He joined the Confederate army at age nineteen and served in the Thirty seventh company of a Tennessee regiment under the command of Captain W. L. Roddie. He moved to Texas in 1866, settling in Rockwall county where he lived for several years and where he was married to Miss Julia Register of Rockwall on July 28, 1868. They moved to a farm at Colquitt and lived there many years. Several years ago they moved to Terrell. Other survivors are forty-three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. His parents reside at Altus, Oklahoma and he is also survived by a wife, who was formerly Miss Rena Echols, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Echols. J. T. Leslie died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mat Zollner this morning on West Nash Avenue. Interment will take place at Chisholm. He was a native of Alabama, being 77 years of age and has lived in Terrell practically all his life. A daughter, Mrs. Zollner of this city, as well as four sons, L. B. Leslie of Grand Prairie, H. Terrell Daily Transcript, August 16, 1920

Harold Boggs, aged twenty-two, died at Royse City Sunday in an attempt to do some electrical wiring. He was an electrician and was at work at the top of a pole, when he came in contact with a live wire, which ignited his clothing. Being strapped to the pole, he was unable to loose himself, and trapped in this way, until the leather thongs were burned, releasing him and he fell to the ground. Onlookers were powerless to help him. He was rushed to the Baptist sanitarium at Dallas, where he has a sister employed as a nurse. He died at midnight last night. His body was carried to Kaufman today for interment. He is survived by his mother, two sisters and a brother. Chisholm - The body of Mason G. Anderson was found today in the harness room of his barn near Chisholm, near by being a bottle of carbolic acid. His mouth was badly burned and a large part of the fluid had been taken. Anderson went to Terrell this morning to make the purchase. He returned and talked to his wife and her mother, playing with his baby. He went from there to the barn and within an hour his dead body was found. It is presumed that business difficulties had bothered him, though he was a man of rather large holdings. He was 43 years of age and is survived by his wife and three children. Terrell Daily Tribune, March 19, 1922 - Mike Maloney was buried Saturday in this city. He was born in County Clair, Ireland in 1888. He died at the residence of his son, John Maloney near Chisholm Friday. He was 89 years of age. He was married to Bridget Maloney in Ireland and they had five children, who survives him. They are: P. M. Maloney and Mrs. Mary Rouvaldt of the Irish Ridge; John Maloney of near Chisholm; Sister Beatrice of St. Louis, Mo.; and Miss Katherine Maloney of Dallas. The ones mentioned children were born in Ireland and moved to the United States with their parents,. He located at Talty in 1898, and lived there for about nine years, afterward moving to their present homes. Besides the above, the following brothers and sisters of Mr. Maloney: Jerry Maloney of the Irish Ridge; John Maloney of High Point; Sam Maloney of Arlington; Dan Maloney of Marshall and Mrs. Ed Vaughan of Dallas. He was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Johns Church in this city. Mrs. G. W. Wilkie died this morning at Royse City at age 75 years. She is survived by a husband and nine children. She had been a resident of Rockwall County for a number of years. A. H. ‘Gus’ Edwards died at Chisholm last night, at age 69 years. He was found dead in his bed. He is survived by two sons, Billy and Charley and his wife. He was a member of the Baptist Church at Chisholm. He was a native of South Carolina, born July 20, 1852. He married December 15, 1886 at Bluffton, Arkansas and shortly afterwards moved to Chisholm. A daughter died in infancy and the two surviving sons being W. A. and C. D. Edwards, the latter of this place, the former of Chisholm. Two brothers also survive, J. A. Edwards of Canyon City and L. B. P. Patton died near Chisholm Sunday. He was born February 25, 1851 in Tennessee, coming to Texas about twenty-nine years ago. He had lived at his last residence about nine years. Mr. Veniar Eugene Barnes, born January 25, 1896 died. He died of fracture of the skull following an accident in Lubbock. A train ran into a wagon which Mr. Barnes was driving. He died in Lubbock Sunday. He was accompanied by his wife, little son, Billie Wayne Barnes, fifteen months old and Louie Moore, brother of Mrs. Barnes. Interment in Chisholm Cemetery today. Mrs. Josephine McGee, wife of G. E. McGee, died at 701 East Asylum Avenue yesterday. She was born in Louisiana, November 11, 1857, married to Mr. McGee in Louisiana December 11, 1879, coming to Texas, settling near Forney, moving from there to Chisholm in Rockwall County and then coming to Terrell in 1901. She was the mother of five children, two of whom preceded her in death, Miss Isora McGee, died May 6^th, 1910 and Mrs. Leona Mercer, February 5^th, 1917. She is survived by her husband and three daughters, Mrs. W. G. Scott of Kaufman, Mrs. M. G. Samuels of Terrell and Mrs. R. S. Duncan of this city and sixteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was a member of the Methodist Church. John Richard Gaskey died at his home ten miles north of Terrell this morning. He was born in Tennessee November 25, 1862. He married Miss Lottie Baxter, who survives him along with his children, George, Lee, Arthur, and Tom Gaskey, Mrs. Rosie Earnhardt, Mrs. Myrtle Goldman, Mrs. Lena Harper, Mrs. Alleen Harper and Mrs. Bettie Floyd. Twelve children were born, three having died in infancy. He had lived in and around Tona for about 26 years. Forney - Mrs. Sallie Dykes, aged 70 years, died at her home here Friday. She was one of the pioneer citizens of Forney and a member of the Baptist Church. Interment at Heath Sunday. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. B. Bowles and Mrs. Charles Hughes of Forney; Mrs. J. M. Hill, Jr., of Kaufman, and Mrs. N. Pratt of Dallas and one son, William Dykes of Forney. Forney Messenger, April 09, 1925- Mrs. William Dykes died in Forney of heart rouble Friday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jim Hill, Jr. Nee Sallie Baker, born August 12, 1861 in Young county, Texas, moved to Forney with her parents at age six. J. B. Maxfield died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. F. McMurray at Chisholm Tuesday. He was born in Columbus, Ohio, September 12, 1837. Married in Beaureau, Logan County, Ohio September 13, 1859 and eight children were born, one dying in infancy. He is survived by his wife and seven children: W. E. Maxfield of Fort Worth, A. B. Maxfield of Big Springs, LeRoy Maxfield of Sulphur Springs, Mrs. J. F. McMurray of Chisholm, Mrs. V. G. Sharver of San Antonio and Jesse Maxfield of Kansas City. They came to Texas in 1874, locating on a farm four miles west of Terrell and moved to Terrell in 1888, then to Chisholm where they made their home with their daughter, Mrs. McMurray. Terrell Daily Tribune, January 20, 1926: Wednesday

Mrs. Elizabeth Mills died at her home in Heath January 14^th. She was born in 1829 in Stanley County, North Carolina. She married I. J. Holt about twenty-year ago and they had three children born to them in Tennessee. They moved to Iuka, Mississippi. Mr. Holt volunteered for the Civil War and went to the army. He was wounded and came home, crippled and broken in health. In 1869 they moved to Texas, the following year he died and left Mrs. Holt with five children, four boys and one girl. She was a member of the Baptist Church. In 1881, she married J. N. Mills and he died seventeen years ago. All of the family have been dead for several years except G. S. Holt of Rockwall, her son. Joseph Thomas Burch died at the home of his son, 1001 East Moore Avenue Thursday. Interment in the Heath Cemetery today. He was born in Chesterfield County, South Carolina on January 15, 1855 and married to Miss Sarah Jane Huntley in 1876; twelve children born, nine survives: D. H. Burch of Cross Springs, Texas, E. P. Burch of Terrell, Mrs. Lee Peck, Mrs. J. M. Williamson, Mrs. J. P. Burtner of Rockwall, Texas, H. G. Burch of Wewoka, Oklahoma, Mrs. M. S. Jordan of Newton, Texas, Robert B. Burch, not located and Albert L. Burch of the United States Navy, four sisters and four brothers. His wife died in 1916. Grace Mortimer Griffith, aged eighty, was buried today in Oakland Cemetery. She was a member of the Baptist Church, born in Missouri in 1846, coming to Texas in 1862 as a child. She was a daughter of Captain William Hubbel Price and Charity Ann Price of Clay County, Missouri. Her father was a Baptist elder and joined the Confederacy fled from Missouri. Her father settled in what is now Fate, Rockwall County. She was married in 1866 to the late Captain Jeremiah Crabb Griffith, a Confederate veteran. They moved to Farmersville, Collin County, Texas. Eight children were born, five of whom with her husband, preceded her in death. She is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. Blanche Cartwright, the wife of M. C. Cartwright. Mrs. Anna G. Fields, surviving wife of the late James C. Fields and her son, Crabb M. Griffith, all of this city. She was one of a family of four girls and two boys. Her brother, G. Sterling Price of Dallas, was named for General Sterling Price of Confederate fame, General Price being a first cousin of Mrs. Griffith’s father, John N. Price, deceased, was a brother and the surviving sisters being Mrs. America E. Jouette, wife of Napoleon E. Jouette of Dallas, Mrs. Susan Taylor, wife of J. M. Taylor of Ada, Oklahoma and Mrs. Florence Ivy, formerly Harris, now the wife of T. W. William Crabb Griffith died at Denver, Colorado Sunday where he with his wife and daughter, Mrs. Wirth Wimberly had been sojourning during the summer. He was born in San Augustine, Texas in 1858, the eldest son of Gen. John Summerfield and Emily Simpson Griffith. At age three, his parents moved to Rockwall, Texas. His father organized a company at Rockwall during the Civil War and served throughout the conflict. He came to Terrell in 1874 with his wife and sons, Will and Gus and daughter, Emily, now Mrs. Mathew Roberts, Sr. In 1889 he moved to Oak Cliff. In 1894, the family moved to Terrell. He married Georgia Charlton in February 9, 1881, sister of the late Judge William Charlton of Dallas. Samuel Sherman Moore died at his residence, three and one-half miles west of Terrell on the Chisholm Road yesterday. He was born in Alabama March 20, 1863. He is survived by his wife and eight children, three sons, W. L. of Chisholm, O. C. of Dallas and E. B. of Forney; five daughters, Mrs. J. Tom Harrell of Chisholm, Mrs. Eunice Fisher and Mrs. Lockey Barnes of Dallas, Mrs. Sam Green and Miss Odeline Moore of Terrell. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Thomas Lee Vaughan died at his home near Chisholm last night. Interment today in Chisholm Cemetery. He was born September 14, 1877 in Arkansas. He was married to Miss Laura Bell LaRue in 1902. He leaves a wife and eight children, four girls and four boys: Everette, Preston, R. H. and Jimmie Lee, Vada, Lennie Vee, Juanita and Mrs. Jess R. Klutts, his mother, six brother and two sisters. Mrs. E. Wickham, who died in Rockwall County was buried in the Lawrence Cemetery today. She was found dead in her bed by her daughter, Mrs. LaRue. She was the stepmother of Will and J. A. Wickham, both of Terrell. W. L. Caughran, who died Friday in Forney sanitarium this morning will be held tomorrow with interment in the Chisholm Cemetery. He was born in Tennessee March 27, 1877 and came to Texas with his parents at age eight years, settling in the Chisholm community. He lived a short time in Terrell and Mineral Wells. He married Miss Lula Jane Odell September 6, 1900 and four children were born, two preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Lula Jane Odell Caughran, two daughters, Mrs. T. M. Daniels of Dallas, Miss Gladys Caughran of Chisholm, one grand-daughter, Juanita Bill Daniels of Dallas, his mother, Mrs. M. L. Caughran of Chisholm, brothers, D. C., D. E., T. G., W. and E. O. Caughran, all of Chisholm, two sisters, Mrs. A. A. Garrett of Malakoff and Mrs. W. A. Edwards of Rockwall. He was a member of the Methodist Church. { William L. Mrs. J. B. Maxfield died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. F. McMurray at Chisholm Wednesday and interment in Chisholm Cemetery Friday. Mrs. Mary Adalie Ellis Maxfield was a native of Illinois, born April 19, 1838. She was married to J. B. Maxfield in Illinois, coming to Texas fifty-five years ago, locating near Terrell. Eight children were born, one dying in infancy. She is survived by children, W. E. Maxfield of Fort Worth, A. B. Maxfield of Big Springs, J. L. Maxfield of Dallas, L. B. Maxfield of Sulphur Springs, Jesse Maxfield of Colorado, Mrs. V. G. Shawver of San Antonio and Mrs. J. F. McMurray of Chisholm. Mrs. Maxfield was a member of the Methodist Church. Corbin McDonald of Ada, Oklahoma, brother-in-law of Mrs. Grady Evans was killed in an oil mill accident in that city. He was reared in Forney and the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Terrell Daily Tribune, February 27, 1929: Wednesday

J. P. Cockrell died this morning at his home in Royce city, where he had lived for the past fifty years. Interment tomorrow. He was a brother of B. I. and J. H. Cockrell of this place and was about 73 years of age, a member of the Methodist Church. J. T. Harwell, here today from Chisholm, reports the death in Tennessee of Mr. Craig, father of Rev. Craig, pastor of the Methodist Church at Chisholm, who died at his home. Rev. Craig and two of his brothers, one a student at S. M. U. {Southern Methodist University} left immediately for Tennessee.

Mylas Klutts, aged 51, a twenty-five year resident of the community died at his home there this morning. Interment will be in Chisholm Cemetery, conducted by the Masons Sunday. Terrell Daily Tribune, March 11, 1929 - Samuel Mylas Klutts who died Saturday was buried Sunday. He was a native of Illinois, born February 18, 1878, coming to Texas when four years old with his parents, settling in Kaufman County, later moving to Chisholm. He spent one year in Oklahoma. He was married in 1898 to Miss Emma Butner and ten children were born, six of whom are living: Eula Mae, Jesse Hillbert, Horace, Ben and Josephine, one grandchild and four sisters also survive: Mrs. Emma Seaton of Des Moines, New Mexico, Mrs. Jernigan of Altus, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Annie Pedigo of Chisholm. He was a member of the Methodist Church, a Mason, and the Eastern Star. Pallbearers: A. H. Seabolt, J. A. Frazier, E. D. Kelly, J. E. Wilson, A. W. Lowery and L. L. L. L. Waggoner, aged 49, former resident of Terrell, died in Fort Worth Friday and buried at Chisholm Saturday. He was a native of Kaufman County and a cousin of A. S. Waggoner. Terrell Daily Tribune, May 08, 1929 (Hiram) Mr. and Mrs. Tom Smith, Mrs. Lillie Price were called to Fort Worth Friday to their brother and uncle, Lisby Waggoner, who died Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Waggoner both lived in this community.

Terrell Daily Tribune, June 08, 1929: Saturday

Rev. Harrison Baker was advised Friday of the death of Olga Kelly, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Kelly, formerly of Chisholm, but for the past ten years of near Greenville, where they own considerable lands. Olga Kelly, some 30 years of age or more, was struck by a train as he was crossing the tracks in Greenville in his car and killed. He lived at Terrell at one time. He is survived by his parents, a younger brother and a sister. Another article. Mr. and Mrs. Charley Edwards were informed Friday of the death of Mr. Kelly. He was a first cousin of Mr. Edwards.

Harrison Cockrell of Terrell died Sunday following an operation performed Saturday. Interment in Oakland Cemetery Monday. He was born in Tupelo, Mississippi March 14, 1866, the son of J. R. and Manda Pratt Cockrell, good old South Carolina Huguenot stock, who early took their march westward, settling first in Mississippi and thence in Texas, locating in Rockwall County. In the early 80's Harrison Cockrell came to Terrell, making his home with the late Matthew Cartwright,. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lalla Cockrell and daughter, Miss Elizabeth and son, James B. Cockrell, an elder brother, B. I. Cockrell of this city and two sisters, Mrs. James Duff of Ferris and Mrs. B. Banks of Royse City. D. F. Brannon of Chisholm died Monday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Guy Collier at Chisholm. He was born July 24, 1848 in Alabama, married first to Miss Emma E. Hill and they had six children, only one survives. His second marriages was to Mary H. Murdock and nine children were born, eight survives: D. F. Brannon, Jr. of Corsicana, H. M. Brannon of Plano, J. T. Brannon of Dallas, M. M. Brannon of Ferris, G. O. Brannon of Garland, Mrs. Guy Collier of Chisholm, W. R. Brannon of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Mrs. J. A. Reel and J. E. Brannon of Wewoka, Oklahoma. Monroe Malone, negro, aged 21 years was found dead in bed at this home near Chisholm Sunday with his skull crushed in. His wife and two of her former "sweethearts" are held for investigation.

Albert Borth died at his home at McLendon Saturday May 3^rd. He had lived at Kaufman, Terrell and Forney. Interment Monday in the Chisholm Cemetery. John Albert Borth was born February 16, 1883 in Iowa. He was the son of Herman and Haida Went Borth, both natives of Germany. He was brought to Texas about 47 years ago and in 1900 the family settled near Kaufman in what is known as the Egan Branch community. He married Miss Bertie Patton of Kaufman about twenty years ago. One son, Albert, Jr. was born. He is survived by his wife, son, his mother and sisters and brothers: F. C. Borth, Mrs. L. R. Grebe, Mrs. J. G. Wleting and Mrs. Bob Patton of Kaufman and H. A. Borth of Lawrence. He was a member of the Baptist church. Pallbearers: Grady Deaton, Cy Shook, Rube Jordan, Anderson Ritchie, W. H. McLendon and Clarence Nichols. C. O’Donnell, aged 71, died here Saturday. Interment in Chisholm tomorrow. He was

a native of St. Clair County, Alabama, born March 27, 1859. He came to Texas in 1904, going first to Archer County, Texas where he lived for eleven years, when he moved to this part of the state. He is survived by his wife and four children: F. R. O’Donnell, W. C. O’Donnell of Colorado City, Texas, Mrs. O. J. Wooldridge of Archer County and A. O’Donnell of this city. Mrs. Lila O’Donnel, wife of the late A. C. O’Donnel, died at Olney, Texas Sunday. Burial at Chisholm. Pallbearers: Henry Hanselka, Oscar Howell, Tom Miller, Sr., Jesse Lovell, Sam Allen and V. W. Flowers. Her death followed that of her husband three weeks ago today. {See May 31, 1920} She was born in St. Clair County, Alabama March 18, 1862. She married forty-nine years ago to A. C. O’Donnell. The following children survive: F. R. and E. S. O’Donnel, Terrell; W. P. O’Donnel, Colorado City, Texas; Mrs. O. J. Wooldridge, Olney, Texas. A brother P. E. Mrs. Anna L. Austin, aged 82 years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. K. Isbell in Heath, Texas Sunday. Interment in Chisholm. She is survived by her two daughters, Mrs. M. K. Isbell of Heath and Mrs. S. J. Cullum of Dalhart, one son, F. J. McLendon of McLendon and grandson, P. I. Austin of this city. She was a native of South Carolina where she married Captain P. A. Mrs. R. E. L. Pinckard, who died in the McLendon community Friday was buried in the Chisholm Cemetery Saturday. Pallbearers: George Berg, Walter Cullins, W. H. Mrs. J. P. Ewing died on December 29, 1930 (sic). She was seventy-eight years, one month and two days old. Her children who are living: Mrs. Annie Harris of Styx, Texas and Mrs. Mattie Lightfoot of Seagoville, Texas. She was born near Raleigh, North Carolina November 21, 1852. She married J. P. Ewing September 14, 1871 in New Orleans, Louisiana and four children were born, three girls and one son. Mrs. Wilma Copeland, deceased and Presley Ewing, deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Ewing came to Texas in 1873,settling near Chisholm, Rockwall County, where all their children were born. In 1887, the family moved to Kaufman County, purchasing a home near Stubbs. She raised the two children of Mrs. Copeland’s. Mr. Ewing died in 1911. Mr. and Mrs. Ewing rode horseback from New Orleans to Rockwall County, Mrs. Ewing knitting completely a pair of socks while riding. Mrs. Lightfoot has a handwoven counterpane made by her mother when a girl. In Mrs. Ewing’s home is her spinning wheel. Mr. Ewing purchased his home at between two and three dollars per acre in the early days of Texas. Mrs. J. P. Ewing was the daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. J. T. Gadd and was one of five children of whom three survive: Mrs. R. M. Phillips, Mrs. David Lewis, both of Kemp and J. T. Gadd of Star, North Carolina. Mrs. Ewing is also survived by twenty-one grandchildren fifteen great grandchildren. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Kaufman Herald, January 15, 1931 - Mrs. J. P. Ewing died December 29, 1930 at age 78 years one month and two day. She is survived by her children, Mrs. Annie Harris of Styx, Texas and Mrs. Mattie Lightfoot of Seagoville, Texas. Mrs. Aubrey Elizabeth Lawhorn Howell was born in Mississippi October 31, 1870. She came to Texas with her parents in 1882. She married L. L. Howell May 31, 1893. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, Margaret and Henri of Dallas, son L. L. Howell, Jr. of Chisholm and one grandson, L. L. George Washington Smith, a forty year resident of Rockwall County, near Colquitt, died Monday at age 91 years. He was born in Alabama December 3, 1840, coming to Texas over fifty years ago, locating in Rockwall County. He was an ex Confederate soldier. He is survived by six children: J. E. Smith of Rogers, Arkansas; Mrs. L. M. Davidson, Little Rock, Arkansas; E. L. Smith, Dallas; Mrs. Eula Jacobs, Dallas; Mrs. Clewra Chapel, Oklahoma City; Mrs. A. G. Griggs of Terrell. One son died in infancy. Mrs. Smith preceded him in 1921. Burial Wednesday. Pallbearers: N. L. Miller, L. D. Hargrove, T. B. Mrs. O. A. Springer of Heath, who died here Thursday, will be buried Friday. Mrs. Lilly Mae Springer was born July 27, 1882. She married September 30, 1900 and eight children were born. Munson- D. T. Richburg died last Wednesday. He was working in his field when a small cold front came up and he and J. E. Nelain went to Mr. Nelain’s barn. They had just arrived at the barn when lightning struck Mr. Richburg, killing him instantly. He is survived by his wife and two children, Floyd of Royse City and Mrs. Goens of Dallas, along with one brother and his mother. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Terrell Tribune, March 15, 1932: Tuesday

Rev. J. W. Brice, pioneer citizen of Terrell died at his home in Bowie, Texas Monday and will be buried in Oakland Memorial Park Wednesday. He was 88 years of age and died from injuries received recently when he fell and broke his hip. He was an ordained minister of the Baptist Church and organized churches at Memphis, Clarendon, Claude, Mobeetle, Wellington and Amarillo. He came to Terrell in the latter seventies. In addition to his ministerial duties, he ran a nursery about one mile west of town on Rockwall road. He moved from Terrell to Rockwall in 1888. He was married to Miss Hattie Chambers in 1864 and eight children were born. Survivors are two sons and one daughter, R. E. Brice and Miss Marie L. Brice of Bowie and Judge C. R. Brice of Roswell, New Mexico. Terrell Tribune March 16, 1932- Rev. J. W. Brice was buried in Oakland Memorial Park by the side of his wife, who died in 1925. Mrs. Mary Lou Caughran of the Chisholm Community died today, on her birthday, having been born July 20, 1855 in Tennessee. Burial in Chisholm Cemetery Thursday. Pallbearers: Charlie Edwards, Jessie Briggs, Grady Isbelle, Grady Deaton, Henry McClendon and Bryan Williams. She married A. T. S. Caughran May 30, 1876. Ten years later they came to Texas settling in the Chisholm Community. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1901 and by one son, W. L. who died in 1929. She is survived by five sons: D. C., D. E. and E. O. Caughran of Chisholm, Walter Caughran of Rockwall and T. G. Caughran of Greenville, two daughters, Mrs. A. A. Garrett of Houston and Mrs. W. A. Edwards of Rockwall; one brother, L. C. Leary of Oklahoma; and three sisters, Mrs. George Massie of Fort worth, Mrs. Tom Waldman and Mrs. George Taylor of Tennessee. She is also survived by several grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Marshal and Mrs. Luther Sullivan were called to Dallas today on the death of the latter’s brother - in - law, Charles Zollner, aged 75. Burial tomorrow at Rockwall. Mrs. Zollner before her marriage was Miss Emma Freudiger, sister of Mrs. Sullivan. Kaufman Daily Herald, February 08, 1933 - Mr. Zollner was born February 14, 1856 in Adelaide, Australia, coming to the United States with his parents, Mathes and Elizabeth Zollner at age of ten. They lived in Iowa ten years then moved to Texas. Mr. Zollner, his father and brother, the late Matthew Zollner, established the Zollner ranch in Rockwall county, one of the largest in this section of the state. He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Marie Kresgo of Kaufman County and Mrs. Emma Shaw of Dallas; one son, Carl Zollner, Jr. of Dallas; four grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Howell and Mrs. B. Prairie Chapel news _ "Grandpa" Burchfield, who died Sunday was brought Sunday to the home of his son J. M. Birchfield, with whom he had made his home for 28 years for burial at Crandall. G. W. Burchfield was born in Alabama May 4, 1842. At age 26 he moved to Arkansas and lived for 23 years. He then moved to Texas and with the exception of two years spent in Rockwall County and two years in West Texas, has made his home in and around Crandall. His wife died in 1892. He is survived by three sons, J. M. and Paul of Oklahoma and Joe of West Texas; one daughter, Mrs. Maggie Sorrells of Gastonia; thirty-seven grandchildren, sixty-five great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Mrs. F. J. McLendon died at McLendon May 29^th. Her maiden name was Georgie Etta Briggs, born in Lexington, Alabama on May 24, 1865. She came to Texas in 1883 and spent her life in and around the Chisholm community. She was married to F. J. McLendon December 11, 1890, who survives her. Forney - Joseph Weldon Futrell, age twelve, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Futrell of Heath, drowned. He and some boys were returning from school with their report cards when they decided to go for a swim. His body was recovered from the tank Tuesday midnight and prepared for burial. Mrs. Lula Caughran died here Sunday. Burial Tuesday in Chisholm Cemetery. Pallbearers: T. S. Nichols, Grady Deaton, Grady Isbell, L. A. Williams, J. T. Wooldridge, L. L. Howell, Jr., Wallace Wilson, Frank Markham. She was a native of Belton, Texas born July 15, 1884. She married the late W. L. Caughran and two daughters were born. She is survived by her daughters, Mrs. T. M. Daniels of Chisholm, Mrs. R. M. James of Royse City; two grandchildren, Jaunita Bill and Tilman Daniels, her aged mother, Mrs. R. S. Leinart; one sister, Mrs. John Harrell of Fort Worth; four half-sisters, Mrs. Robert Baker of Dallas, Mrs. Hugh Taylor of Royse City, Mrs. E. O. Mauldin of Dallas, Mrs. Sam Price of Royse City; two half-brothers, Scott Leinart of Royse City and Ernest Leinart of Dallas; several step-brothers and sisters, among whom is Dock Leinart of Terrell. Rockwall - Mrs. Flora Barnes, 53, shot herself to death yesterday in the presence of her husband, John Barnes. Burial Thursday. Lindsey, 32, Royse City, married, no children and P. ‘Piggy’ Fair, 33, Royse City, driver of the sedan and Joe Adams, 24, Royse City. Terrell Tribune, June 03, 1935 - ... Joe Bailey Adams, one of the three dead, was the youngest son of Hamp Adams of Royse City. The senior Adams is a first cousin of A. H. Ables. Mrs. Ables said that young Adams would be buried tomorrow in Royse City. Greenville - The body of W. L. Moore, 73 of the Whitehead community, Hunt County was found Sunday in a barpit near the Sabine River. He had been missing from home since Friday. Inquest ruled accidental drowning. Terrell Tribune, November 06, 1935, Whitehead news - W. L. Moore died from drowning in the Sabine bottom Friday, November 1^st. He had gone to the pasture to get his cow when he was caught in a head rise. Darkness came on and he was caught in the bottom. Being old and unable to see very well it appears that in trying to follow a fence out of the bottom he stepped into a slough over his head. He was found Saturday by a searching party. Kaufman Daily Herald, September 16, 1936: Wednesday

Royse City - H. J. Lancaster, 56, native of Rockwall county was dragged to death by a mule Tuesday. He had gone to the pasture for the animal and was returning to the house. The rope with which he was leading the mule was wrapped about his arm. The animal became frightened and started running. Lancaster was killed when his body hit a fence post. He is survived by his widow, three daughters, Mrs. Ottis McGahey, Mrs. Curley Butner and Mrs. Adolph Borse of Munson; one son, Sonny, of California; two brothers, Arthur of Dallas and J. Isaac Land Edwards died today in Fort Worth. Burial in Oakland Memorial Park tomorrow. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Butler Edwards, brother, Filar Edwards, both living in Fort Worth, a daughter living in Terrell. He was formerly of Chisholm, but moved to Fort Worth around 1900. He was 60 years of age. Mrs. Griffith had been with her father since he became ill, about six weeks ago. He was born in Forsthye County, Georgia February 10, 1875. The family came to Texas when he was a child and for twenty years lived near Chisholm. Pallbearers: Newman Leland, Rockwall: William Parr, C. B. Rockwall - Ellen Hill, negro woman, who is approximately 115 years old, died at her home Sunday. Burial in the family cemetery. Since the freeing of the slaves Ellen had lived in the negro settlement south of Rockwall, where she owned a farm. She had been the property of a Dallas family. For twenty eight years it had been the custom for her family to honor her on June 19^th with a family reunion and picnic on the banks of the river near her home. She was active and able to walk about the house until stricken nine days ago. In recent years she devoted her time to piecing quilts, but prior to 1910, she spun and wove the cloth used by her family. She was the mother of fourteen children, eight of whom survive her. She is also survived by fifty-two grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. {Funeral Home Marker, 1935, per Rockwall City Cemetery [colored]. His wife and three children preceded him in death. He leaves Mrs. S. C. Mason, Greenville, Tx; Mrs. C. A. Sebastain, Jr., McLendon; Mrs. L. Waggoner, Henderson, Texas; Mrs. F. G. McKinney, Edinburg, Texas; thirteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. In 1935, he married Evangeline West of Dallas, who also survives. He was born in Alabama December 5, 1881. He came to Texas with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Lovell when just a boy, making his home in Kaufman and Rockwall counties. Emmett Dunn, 19 year old son of Mrs. Della Dunn of Heath, was fatally wounded while hunting Monday with two companions. He was shot accidentally with a 22 caliber rifle in the hands of John Lewis Crumpley, the bullet striking him in the chest. Albert Morton, 62 of this city for seventeen years, died June 27, at his home. Burial June 28^th in Willow Springs Cemetery in Heath. He was born in Dallas December 18, 1876 at Heath, later moving to Rockwall. He married Miss Dora Holt of Heath in 1902. In 1922, they moved to Forney. Forney - G. B. Cullens, 73, died at his home near Heath Wednesday. He had lived in this area for more than fifty years. By his first marriage eleven children were born. Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Roberts of Tyler were called to Santa Ana, California by the death of her brother, J. O. Heath. The immediate cause of his death was the amputation of his leg. He was 57 years old, the son of the late E. C. Heath of Rockwall. He is survived by his wife and daughter. Burial in Santa Ana.

J. W. ‘Whit’ Terrell, 80, a native of Terrell and for whose father, Robert A. Terrell, the town took its name, died at his home in Royse City Monday. Burial today. Whit Terrell was born in the old octagon house, which still stands [Note: this house still stands in 2005] and at present used as a mess hall by the Texas Military college. It was built by his father in the primitive days of Terrell. He married Miss Florence Rowell January 18, 1882. He is survived by his wife; two sons, C. B. and J. W. Terrell, Jr.; two daughters, Mrs. J. M. Cookson and Mrs. Willie Sorrells; thirteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was the step-father of the late Mrs. A. H. Ables. He has lived at Royse City for the past 57 years.

 

 Kaufman Herald, October 27, 1938, Royse City - W. H. Terrell died Monday. He was born at Terrell, February 26, 1858. He is survived by his widow and four children, two sons, Burnette and Whit, Jr.; two daughters, Mrs. Mike Cookston and Mrs. Willie Sorrells; two brothers, W. A. Within the brief time of six days, two pioneer citizens of Graham Point died. Pleas H. Young, 76, died last Friday with burial Sunday at Royse City Cemetery. C. E. Daniels, 73, died Wednesday and buried Thursday at Mount Zion. Both men are survived by their wives and five children each. {Pleas H. Young, 1865 - 1938, ss/w Mary J. Mrs. Charlotte Ann Gaskey died in the Harris Chapel community Tuesday. Burial in the Blackland Cemetery Wednesday. She was the widow of the late J. R. Gaskey, born in Alabama April 9,1860, coming to Texas and to the Rockwall County some fifty years ago, locating near Royse City. The family later moved to Harris Chapel in Hunt County. She was the mother of thirteen children, four of whom, two sons and two daughters, preceded her. She is survived by four sons: George Gaskey, Grand Saline; Lee Gaskey, Rockwall; Arthur Gaskey, Harris Chapel and Tom Gaskey of Munson; five daughters: Mrs. John Earnhart, Mrs. Sid Goldman, Rockwall; Mrs. Will Harper, Blackland, Mrs. Oscar Harper, Dallas; and Mrs. Ben Floyd, Terrell; fifty grandchildren; two brothers, Jim Baxter and Pete Baxter of Coleman, Texas; two sisters: Mrs. Dave Wester, Royse City and Mrs. Jim Walker, Denison. Mrs. Kathryn Rogers Howell, wife of John L. Howell, died at Poetry Monday. Burial Wednesday in Chisholm Cemetery. Her grandsons will be pallbearers. She was born in Kaufman County October 25, 1870. She married John L. Howell September 2, 1891 and ten children were born, three of whom preceded her. She is survived by her husband; seven daughters, Mrs. G. P. Mason, Mrs. T. L. Belew of Royse City, Mrs. V. C. Pitts of Terrell, Mrs. T. W. Lowrie of Poetry, Mrs. R. E. Johnson and Miss Dora Howell of Wichita Falls and Mrs. D. M. Wolfe of Olney; twenty-seven grandchildren, one of whom is Rogers Pemberton Howell, age ten, whom Mr. and Mrs. Howell had reared from infancy, and three great grandchildren; three brothers, T. W. Henry N. Nash of the Munson community died Thursday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Riggs, near Royse City. Burial Sunday in Chisholm Cemetery. He was born at Magnolia, Mississippi January 18, 1868. He came to Texas in 1882, settling in Ellis county, later moving to Dallas county, before moving to Rockwall county in 1896. He enlisted in Co. K 2^nd Texas Vol. Infantry, later being transferred to Co. A, 1^st Texas Inf, serving in the clean-up of Havana after the Spanish American war. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Helen McGinnis of Gilbert, Arizona, Mrs. Mary Riggs, Royse City; two sons, Lindsey Nash of near Royse City and Henry M. Nash of San Francisco, California; one sister, Mrs. Eloise Burch of Batesville, Arkansas along with several grandchildren. He married Miss Lois Causey about 1900, who preceded him in 1913. Adolphus Monroe Nichols of Chisholm died Friday. Burial in the Chisholm Cemetery. Pallbearers: Clifford Jordan, A. M. Jordan, R. M. Loughlin, R. A. Nichols, Thomas Nichols, Jr., all grandsons and Paul G. Deaton. He was born in Fayette County, Alabama April 12, 1859. He came to Texas while a youth, locating first at Rhome, living there a few years, then to Chisholm. He was twice married and the father of ten children, three of whom preceded him, first an infant, then a son, Roy, and a daughter, Mrs. Bond Nance. He is survived by two sons, C. B. Nichols and T. S. Nichols, both of Chisholm; five daughters: Mrs. Rube Jordan, McLendon; Mrs. R. M. Loughlin, Wylie; Mrs. D. D. Darby, Hollywood, California; Mrs. F. H. Manner, Dallas and Mrs. Carl C. Mrs. Betty Shook, a nonagenarian died at Chisholm Saturday. Her husband preceded her a number of years ago. Burial at Chisholm Sunday. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clarence Nichols and is survived by eight children. Terrell Tribune, March 11, 1940 - Mrs. Betty Good Shook was buried Sunday. She was the wife of B. Shook. She was born in Marshfield, Missouri, December 19, 1852, where she married Mr. Shook on November 18, 1869. The family moved to Texas in the fall of 1892, locating at Poetry, later moving to Chisholm. She was the mother of eleven children, one of whom died in infancy. She is survived by five sons, J. M. Shook of Bakersfield, California; J. B. Shook of Forney; B. D. Shook of Vernon; P. T. Shook of Dallas and John M. Shook of Spokane, Washington; five daughters, Mrs. W. F. McAnally of Poetry; Mrs. J. J. McCormick of Kaufman; Mrs. W. A. Dennis of Graham; Mrs. W. M. J. W. Meridith learned Friday of the death of his brother, Theodore H. Meridith near Rockwall. He was 72 years old. Burial in Mt. Zion Cemetery between Royse City and Rockwall. Mr. Meridith was born in Indiana January 24, 1868, the son of Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Meridith, long time residents of Terrell. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Emmett and Earl; three brothers, J. W., Terrell; Role Meridith, Vernon, Texas and Zarus Meridith of Los Angeles. Mr. Meridith was formerly from Terrell. Attending from here were: Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Meridith, C. K. Patton, Mrs. W. W. Miss Alma Hellams, sister of Homer Hellams of this city and Miss Ethel Hellams of Royse City, was buried in Chisholm cemetery by the side of her parents. She was born at McLendon, Rockwall County, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John F. James A. C. Howell died October 28^th at his home in Altus, Oklahoma. He is survived by his four daughters: Mrs. Mary Davis of Graham; Mrs. J. F. Leslie of Wichita, Kansas; Mrs. J. J. Hodges, Altus and Mrs. J. H. Hodges of Paul’s Valley, Oklahoma and one brother, Homer Howell of Altus. The Howells came to Texas from Alabama, locating in Rockwall County.
