Rockwall Scores Three Touchdowns in Last Half to Win
The first half of the game was mostly a punting duel between the two teams. Neither team seriously threatened the opponent’s goal line in this half.
At about the middle of the third quarter, Thaxton, Rockwall quarterback, intercepted a pass on his own 30-yard line. He brought it back to his 36 before he was stopped after a series of line plays and end runs had carried the ball to the Bulldog 10-yard line, Barringer hit the center of the line for the touchdown. Lofland went through center for the extra point.
At the end of the third quarter the Yellowjackets had placed the ball on the Bulldog’s 7-yard line. At the start of the fourth period, Lofland plunged over for the touchdown after two other attempts failed. Try for point failed.
Caughran, center for Rockwall, intercepted a Bulldog pass and returned it to the Bulldog 7-yard line. The Yellowjackets were unable to carry it over for the touchdown and Royse city took the ball on its own 1-yard line. Otts dropped back to kick from behind his own goal line but Dowell and Wade rushed in and blocked the kick, Dowell recovering for the third and final touchdown.
The Bulldogs were roundly outplayed by the heavier Yellowjackets. Rockwall made 17 first downs to the Bulldogs’ 5.
The Yellowjackets gained a total of 315 yards, but lost 28 for a net gain of 286 yards gained from scrimmage. The Bulldogs gained only 110 yards from scrimmage and lost 21, giving them a net gain of 89 yards.
Royse City tried 13 passes, completed four of these and having two intercepted. Rockwall tried only three. One of these was complete and another was intercepted.
Miller made the longest run of the game. Toward the end of the first quarter he intercepted a Rockwall pass and raced 48 yards to the Yellowjacket 32-yard line.
The play of Crowell and Miller in the backfield and Hicks and Legg in the line was outstanding for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will be idle until Friday night, November 20, when they play Whitewright here under the lights.
