I am seeking information of Marcus Lafayette BARNES (1830-1859) who was killed & scalped by Indians at Pike's Peak in Pecos Co TX. I do not know WHY he was there -Army? Scout? Trail drive? Surveyor? On Jan 12, 1913 Wallace BRITAIN who ranched near Ft. Stockton was murdered; shot in the back while opening his ranch gate. A suspect was arrested, tried and acquited. For family history purposes I would like to know the name of the person who was tried and acquited. This I understand was a sensational trial at the time. I am looking for copies or someone who is willing to xerox pages from the following book "Pecos A History of the Pioneer West" written by Alton Hughes. I was told this book contains several pages on my family which I am doing research on. The following surnames that would be contained in this book are MCELROY and PARKER. John Thomas MCELROY was my Great Great Uncle who married Mamie PARKER. John was a millionaire from ranching and oil and died in the 1930's. His wife was 30 years younger than him and she is of the famous PARKER families who pioneered in the early days of Texas before it became a state. I cannot find this book locally nor will libraries that own it loan it to my library.
