Our Pet Project

It was a long, long trail awinding from the slow beginning of our popularity contest to its tornado-like finish. For a time it semed endless, and we feared that our class beauties might wither and fade before the selection was made. It was a terrible strain on them, too -- this trying to be beautiful for so long at a stretch. And what if it went on and on until our high school sheiks and popular boys became old married men, dandling their goggle-eyed offspring upon their knees? Who would care to see their pictures THEN!

Naturally the liveliest scrapping occurred in contests which involved the female of the species. The frolicsome fish fought furiously for their flip flapperette, while the juniors joyously jimmied their jazzy yell leader to the foot of the throne. But only to the foot. At the very last minute, the sleepy, senile seniors bestirred themselves, threw off the inactivity for which they are famous, and place the slim and graceful Lois in the place of honor. This was quite a jolt for the junior jelly beans, but they revenged themselves by putting Gerry's Jimmy over as popular boy.

The biggest return from the contest was in books for our library. Each new book added gave fifty votes toward any desired candidate. This brought in contributions which exceeded in value those already in the library. The school board immediately provided a convenient library, devoting the old history room to that purpose. In May a second contest was staged by the seniors for the benefit of the library and several hundred more volumes of new fiction were added. Chairs and other furnishing will be added by the seniors, and any money remaining in the Annual fund will be used to buy more books.
