Information on Some of the People Buried in Clayton Cemetery
I(saac) N(oel) Clark born in Lincoln County, Tennessee, son of James Clark born March 8, 1808 in North Carolina, in probably what is now Davidson County, NC. His first marriage to Elizabeth Merrill occurred there in 1829. Isaac's mother was a cousin or other relative of Elizabeth. His mother was Sarah Virginia Driver. She married Isaac after the death of Elizabeth in 1847, date unknown, place unknown. Probable place may be Moore County, TN, as a search of Lincoln County records has not located a marriage license. Many members of her family lived in Moore County.
W(innie) L(orene) Hardin married I.N. Clark in Lincoln County, TN, on November 8, 1887. She was the daughter of John Thomas Hardin, born in Giles County, TN, on May 2, 1841, died in Panola County, buried in Bethlehem Cemetery, Panola County. Winnie's mother, Harriet Elizabeth Robinson, born in 1847, (probably Lincoln County, TN), according to her tombstone in Bethlehem Cemetery, died December 30, 1906, in Panola County.
Isaac Clark married Idella Minter after Winnie's death. Idella was a widow whose husband is buried next to her in Clayton Cemetery. Isaac is buried next to his first wife Winnie.
Isaac and Winnie's children were: James Albert, buried in Scurry County, Texas; Herbert, buried in Clayton with his wife Mellie; Fred Alfred, buried in Clayton as is his wife Donnie Duke; daughters, Era, Ela, (twins), Fannie, places of burial unknown.
Blanton Errol Clark, oldest son of James Albert Clark and Ida Mae Jones, married in Panola County on December 23, 1909, is also buried at Clayton. His widow Jewel (Wooten) still lives in Clayton. She will be buried next to B. E. in Clayton. Also buried in Clayton is an infant daughter, unnamed, of Blanton and Jewel Clark. They have two living daughters.
S (amuel) S (tephen) Reed born in TN, son of John Harper Reed and his wife Nancy L. (Hines possibly), also both born in TN, married in Rusk County, Texas, Sarah Adelaide Greenwood, born in St. Clair County, Alabama, daughter of John Greenwood, born in Virginia in 1799 ca and Harriet Thomas, married in St. Clair County, AL on February 22, 1835. S. S. and his wife are both buried in Clayton Cemetery. Her tombstone does not make a very readable picture, but it gives her birth date as July 11, 1839, and her date of death as May 11, 1895. Both are buried in Clayton. Their daughter Mary A. is the mother of Ida Jones who married J. A. Clark. Mary Antoinette Reed married Solomon Harrison Jones on December 4, 1872 in Panola County, Texas. Place of burial of this Jones family is unknown.
A tombstone for Robert and "Lizzie" Reed is also in Clayton. From the birth date, I believe this to be John H.and Nancy's son Robert also born in TN. His wife was Amanda Elizabeth Phillips, but I have no further information on marriage date. If this is the correct Robert and "Lizzie", they are parents of Gary R. who is also buried at Clayton. Gary also has two daughters buried there, Mary Lucille and Melissa Ruth.
Francis Marion Reed (as it is in my data base) is another son of S. S. Reed and Sarah Reed. I have that his wife's name was Ophelia Black, but have no further information.
I welcome corrections as much of the Reed family in particular has come from published sources. The Clark family is researched by my sister, or me, but could still have errors. The S. S. Reed family did not come from published sources. That is my line, which has been checked with original records as far as possible. I have copies of the original records.
