Boynton Cemetery

Directions: From Carthage go westbound on State Highway 315 for 13.2 miles to the point where FM 348 intersects to the right. Turn right on to FM 348 and proceed northbound for 1.2 miles to the intersection with Panola County Road 155. Turn left on to CR 155 and proceed westbound for 1.4 miles. The cemetery is located right beside the road on the right side and has an archway over the gate with the name "Boynton Cemetery".
Although the rest of the markers in the cemetery are believed to mark the graves of white people there is one notable exception. Just inside the front gate and to the right there is a beautiful marbled pink and black granite marker. This marker is inscribed:
"In memory of Aunt Annie slave of Moses Boynton died ca 1860. First grave in the cemetery exact location unknown. This marker dedicated to Annie and any other Boynton slaves buried here. 1989"
Maria Elizabeth (Betty) Hambrick Screws b. June 15 1859 d. Dec 30 1895 from TB She is the granddaughter of Moses Boynton. Her mother was Antoinette Boynton who married George Hambrick He died in a POW camp during the Civil War in March 1863. Marita Elizabeth Screws is their daughter. Marita Elizabeth Hambrick married Lucius Screws June 1876 in Van Zandt County at the Hambrick Plantation and eventually returned to Rusk and Panola Counties before her death. Lucius Screws visited her grave often and intended to put a permanent marker and plant a tree at her grave but never did.
